How to Select Chemical Testing Services   Chemical testing. Image Credit: Galbraith Laboratories | Quality Wars   Chemical testing services test, analyze, and certify a wide range of chemicals for purity, chemical compatibility, and environmental impact. Larger companies often have in house testing capabilities, but independent labs are almost always needed to conform to regulation requirements. These laboratories can also provide solutions to impact a company's...

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to faulty or incompetent practices of chemical testing services?
3 answers
Answers:
Yes. An 10.000 liter glass-lined reactor was destroyed by an explosion because the pH of the reaction has to be controlled by NaOH. But the company received containers of NaClO4, erroneously labeled as NaOH. The product did not caught in QC testing.

Q:
What would your design or feature "wish list" be for this service's capabilities?
12 answers
Answers:
I would like to see a portable RAMAN on the market which is an "omnivore", designed to interface with multiple libraries of standards (chemical, pharmaceutical, mineral etc) in addition to creating its own libraries of real world (complex, contaminated) samples. The software should be able to analyze complex or contaminated samples and break it down into the constituent waveforms. The concept is that the machine would become more adept in this process, the more it is used, because of the increasingly extensive database of experience with complex samples.
~St. John's, Canada
More detailed analysis / interpretation of results would be the top of my wish list. Next would be level of detail (if I'm analyzing an adhesive or sealant, I don't want the results to say "roughly 60% polymer matrix" any sophomore chemist who can read can see generic formulas and determine that - I'm looking for details like "polymer matrix consisting of 20% low MW materials in the range of xxx-yyy and 40% by wt of higher MW materials".
~David P, Research & Development, Solon, OH
There are, in under developed countries, the possibility of manufacturing off-patent products, like did India and China. But considering the prices, the best policy is to import the RMs, from these countries. The quality control is very important. There are companies that are installing QC laboratories in China. From this point of view, the identification of the products, its concentration and impurities are fundamental. This is important in countries like Brazil, in pharmaceutical products, that use RMs from China and India, for manufacturing of "GENERIC PHARMACEUTICALS".
~Nikolai Z, Technical Support, São Paulo, Brazil
