As previously stated, I've used them to drive mixers and pumps. They have also been used to power winches, excavating equipment and track drills. They've also been used for tramming motors on certain underground mining equipment. I don't think of any of these uses as being "non standard".

A customer of mine eliminated a brake in a system that used an air motor to move an elevator in an EEX II area. One day the light went off... The 5/3 valve used had some leaks the customer did not want to repair 2 weeks before this accident happened.

Air motors are very useful and have a lot of advantages but bear in mind that 1HP generated with compressed air is 7 times more expensive than this same power generated with electricity.

If compressed air is the medium of choice, ensure that the air is conditioned (dried, filtered and lubricated) to enhance the operation and service life of the motors to be driven.

Yes. Given the volume of air consumed for any application vs. the power output of any air motor, it would be best seek other means to powering equipment unless there is an unlimited source of compressed air for other purposes. (e.g. An underground mine in which rock drills and other air powered equipment are routinely used.)
