Q:
What new technologies are influencing welding, brazing and soldering equipment design?
23 answers
Answers:
Inverter based power sources offer many advantages which were not available in transformers and thyristor based machines. Diminishing size of CNC systems, both for welding and cutting ,offer more portability and makes these suitable for smaller jobs and smaller volumes. Laser welding and cutting has made it possible to obtain more precise shapes and least wastage of material. Latest material handling equipments are big boost to productivity.
~Satyendra Kumar A, Director Fusion Resources, Vadodara, India
Electronics and inverter technology making the equipment smaller and easier to use. Also by making equipment smaller the electricity demands drop both for voltage and current.

Answers:
Filler welding old bolt holes on the bottom hull sonar retaining ring of a submarine when replacing the sonar device with a different fixing arrangement. The metal had hardened due to the welding process and the retaining ring could not be be re-drilled to fit the new sonar in its desired position. This required consultation with the sonar and submarine designers over the next week or so to find a position which could be drilled and was compatible with the correct working of the sonar.

Yes I have seen many: Welding in unsafe conditions like damp areas, welder getting a severe electrical shock. A person tried to braze a magnesium deck lawn mower, caught it on fire and then made the fire bigger by putting water on it. Welding or soldering in poorly ventilated areas. Fumes can cause long term damage.
~Don S, Technical Support, Ypsilanti, MI
I have seen a person who had almost lost one hand through using unsafe gas equipment. This person was still using this equipment even without flashback arrestors with the potential of an explosion. They are no longer in business.

Q:
Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using welding, brazing and soldering equipment?
15 answers
Answers:
Please see the suitability of the equipment for your application. Please do not give undue importance to copper winding in transformer, aluminium winding is equally good if the design is correct. Please pay enough attention to the easy availability of spares and service engineer.
~Satyendra Kumar A, Director Fusion Resources, Vadodara, India
Always speak to a local distributor before buying off the internet. Many machines specs within the low end market stretch the truth on the product's ability. New to welding or brazing, take into account your personal safety and working area.
~Ian H, Marketing/Sales, London, England
If you can, rent different products to try them out. Don't depend on trade show or in store demos to give you a product's capabilities. Use it in your application to make sure it does what you want it to and is easy for you to use.
