Q:
What new technologies are influencing lithium battery design?
22 answers
Answers:
Lithium Iron, lithium air and the developments which is emerging should augur well for replacement of inefficient, bulky lead acid batteries for many an application.
~Rgahavan G, Consultant Storage power, Bangalore, India
Electric vehicle demands are driving design towards higher energy density, long life, and safety.
~Engineer, South Pasadena, CA
Lithium iron, as also the lithium air cells ( in development stage as yet )

Q:
From your perspective, which companies are creating the most innovative lithium batteries?
23 answers
Answers:
Don't know, it is not Rayo Vac for sure. I have not the name in my head, but it is not sold in common stores, you have to go to specialty camera stores to find them.
~Carmen D, Health research, Heredia, Costa Rica
Panasonic, Sony, Energizer- these product are for daily consumer use. Not quite sure for industrial use, may be Saff-Nife.
~Othmani Omar O, Project Manager, Terengganu, Malaysia
A123, Quallion, Dowkokam, and research by MIT team are some of the developments worth looking at.

Q:
What are some of the applications you have used lithium batteries for?
35 answers
Answers:
We have just about introduced large formatted lithium batteries for powering the BTS in telecom towers, where due to non availability of grid power huge quantities are used/ wasted by running DG sets . Lead acid has many restrictions while most of it is overcome using Lithium LAB, requires 10-12 hrs of charging while 80 % of charge can be restored in lithium in 2 hrs time.
~Rgahavan G, Consultant Storage power, Bangalore, India
Same as above and also in electric stackers , plat form trucks, tow masters and forklifts ( other than counter balanced trucks).
~Raghavan G, Marketing/Sales, Bangalore, India
Small footprint. Airborne long life transmitter application (UAV). High Capacity road vehicle energy storage application.

Q:
Please share with us any “non-standard” applications that lithium batteries have been used for.
12 answers
Answers:
Lithium Batteries could find application in stackers, Platform trucks,( other than counter balanced fork lift trucks) Usage of lithium for drilling heads in oil exploration, Pigging for product pipe lines in gas and oil transportation , Solar street lighting, solar powered Traffic signals, Runway lights in Airports etc
~Rgahavan G, Consultant Storage power, Bangalore, India
Not sure if these batteries are used in solar apps ie to store power during the sunlight days and use the stored power during off sun times / night think of irrigation pumps, solar street lighting, off shore oil drilling etc
~Raghavan G, Marketing/Sales, Bangalore, India
Applications that used to be powered by a wall plug, can now use a lithium battery due to the high energy of a lithium battery.
~Engineer, South Pasadena, CA

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of lithium batteries?
12 answers
Answers:
Except for portable application, not aware of any serious accidents in lithium, let's understand that lead acid batteries spew dangerous Hydrogen gas and so ventilation is a mandatory requirement. It is well known that many a Data center have been ripped due to "Hydrogen Gas " levels going higher than safe limits, besides in Data centers it is a practice to locate the VRLA batteries at the basement since they require large space, while lithium besides having lower foot prints does not have such issues.
~Rgahavan G, Consultant Storage power, Bangalore, India
No, the only disaster that happens is when you leave the batteries in a machine and don't use it (leakage) or when you store batteries with other things instead of having them aside in a special plastic box for them.
~Carmen D, Health research, Heredia, Costa Rica
Not to say incorrect usage because the battery compartment is specialized for that category of battery. Lithium batteries may be used to trigger explosive in a public area.

Q:
What would your design or feature "wish list" be for this product?
24 answers
Answers:
Weightless, non pollutant and that it can run for hours (I don't care if it can recharge itself from the air or water, if not, that would be a wish). Probably size is also an issue, but too small gets lost too easily.
~Carmen D, Health research, Heredia, Costa Rica
1.Working voltage 2.Discharge capacity (mAh/g) 3.Energy efficiency (C discharge/C charge) 4.Weight comparison for the same capacity/Size comparison for the same capacity 5.Reliability
~Duncan Chang, Project Manager, Longtan, ??
Bespoke packaging. Present solution is multi parallel/series assembly. A single or multiple group assembly ready made would be smaller, more reliable but likely thermally compromised.

Q:
Is there any advice you want to share with users to help them avoid common errors in selection or usage of lithium batteries?
16 answers
Answers:
Generally people have tendency to compare the ah capacity of lead acid battery with Lithium. This is incorrect as lithium cells have no de rating ( reduction in capacity ) factor while discharging at higher rates, hence for a given load profile it would be necessary to optimize the cell capacity which would reflect a lower cost.
~Rgahavan G, Consultant Storage power, Bangalore, India
Please disperse more info about lithium (rechargeable ), Lead acid, Nicd etc. Have IEC standards followed by BIS/ Indian standards, not seen any on lithium. Telcordia refers to 4 hr discharge rate for telecom apps, while people refer to one hour discharge rate while specifying the capacity which is correct / standard.
~Raghavan G, Marketing/Sales, Bangalore, India
Chemical charge states are said to change at particular % levels such as to influence the life (above X% and below Y% constitutes a life/cycle). The life (number of charge/discharge cycles) is supposedly increased by maintaining the duty cycle within this band.

Q:
Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using lithium batteries?
19 answers
Answers:
Best price per charge time. I have no idea if there are rechargeable ones, if they exist, it is better, less pollution, and fewer trips to the store.
~Carmen D, Health research, Heredia, Costa Rica
Check the chemistry, many different types of lithium all with slightly different charge/discharge termination voltages.
~J T, Technical Support, Forestdale, Australia
Do not buy unknown makes and do plenty of research first, preferably contact someone with Real Life Use experience.
