What new technologies are influencing room air conditioner design?

Basic concept is almost the same same old technology but controls has become much more advanced. Not aware of new technology to cool the room other than traditional concept.

So far they all appear to be made in China and all relatively cheap and less reliable than older models we used to get.

What are some of the applications you have used room air conditioners for?

Answers:
Low-Rise Residential buildings, including single family houses, duplexes, and small apartment buildings. High-Rise Residential buildings, such as tall dormitories and apartment blocks. Commercial buildings, which are built for commerce, including offices, malls, shopping centers, restaurants, etc. Institutional buildings, which include hospitals, governmental, academic, and so on. Industrial spaces where thermal comfort of workers is desired. Sports Stadiums - recently, stadiums have been built with air conditioning to allow competition to take place in summer.

They have their place and time. Some people still have them that have floor furnaces or wall furnaces or the possibility of not being able to get duct work to a second floor room or be able to cool a converted attic to a room and make it comfortable. Then you have the people that just want to cool a room.

Temporary offices in warehouses and construction sites. Also, truck and or trailer mounted units for mobile command centers, radio rooms etc which have their own built in generators for high voltage power supply.

Some A/C's were used to cool a Battery Charging bank into a cargo container and that was of harmful effect due to acidic fumes which condensed on evaporators. The customer asked for acid proof evaporator!!

Once used as a make-shift food cooler in an low-E style tent (experimental but worked very well, crude but it did maintain a food safety standard).

Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of room air conditioners?

Answers:
Installation errors in chilled water systems almost always lead to disaster; chilled water systems are more efficient but they imply the risk of having piping all over your buildings and water running over very expensive assets and critical areas. That risk must be minimized by flawless execution during construction and installation.

They don't have the right plug-in for the unit or the plug-in is worn out and can cause a fire by the cord overheating. Be sure your electrical service can handle the unit you install. Consult a good electrician if you need a better power source.

The biggest was a unit that was not properly positioned to let the condensate drain and a significant mold problem resulted......buying a unit is easy, make sure you have it installed in a proper location....."especially not in an interior room".

Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using room air conditioners?

Do not buy oversize. Get what you need but realize that the btu rating is for an stp condition-- high humidity or large occupant loading may affect the heat load of the room and require a bigger unit.

Always use the equipment with the capacity that better suits your needs; never over dimension nor think that bigger or more capacity is better.

To keep air conditioner level as low as possible avoid the warm layer up on the attic to keep the compressor relaxed periodically.

Is there any advice you want to share with users to help them avoid common errors in selection or usage of room air conditioners?

* To choose a comfortable temperature and not far below, as well as maintaining the higher temperature selection close to the comfort range avoiding frequent start/stop of the compressor. * To ask an expert for selecting the capacity, because most of the customers exaggerate higher capacities when they buy their units.

Selecting an equipment with a larger capacity than the one you actually need for your application would result in a bigger spend in maintenance, and repairs due to malfunction, a/c equipments are designed to operate in certain range and constantly operating them in a very low setting would result in damage.

Have your unit properly sized, there are plenty of good resources available on the internet and "plan ahead"........ don't wait until the peak of a hot spell where you find yourself paying a premium for a unit. Retailers know how to take advantage of seasonal trends for their bottom line.
