Image Credit: MSI- Viking Gauge | Starrett   Calipers typically use a precise slide movement for inside, outside, depth or step measurements. Specialized slide type calipers are available for center, depth and gear tooth measurement and gaging machine table travel.  Some caliper types such as spring / fay or firm joint calipers do not usually have a graduated scale or display and are used for comparing or transferring dimensions.   Caliper Types Common types of...

Q:
What new technologies are influencing caliper design?
19 answers
Answers:
For large ones they should be light - fiber carbon built. For the digital models they should be equipped with SPC interface.
~AARON M., Senior Calibration Technician, HAIFA, ISRAEL
I prefer the old standby dial calipers from starett or mituyo. i do not like the digital calipers.
~Engineer, Gorham, ME
Plastics (for instance carbon fiber) and electronics (digital).

I purchase thru a snap on tools vendor. I'm not sure who manufactures them for them, but I think mitutoyo makes a very good product for the money.

Re SPC - Japanese & English/Swiss Price & unusual configurations re jaws or fractional - Chinese
~Roy M, RSM Quality Services, Poole, UK
Mitutoyo, although there are now many generic calipers available of similar specification.

Applications and UseTop

Q:
What are some of the applications you have used calipers for?
27 answers
Answers:
With an inventory of 200 calipers we maintain their calibration and repair. These calipers are used from design verification of part, the fabrication of new parts and also in the repair and overhaul of landing gears.
~Daniel Donckers, Calibration Inspector, Longueuil, Canada
Venier type calipers to meas. crank & cam journals, s-cam bearing surfaces for air brake sys. axle shafts & spindles, plus many others for transport ind.
~BUTCH R, TRACTOR TRAILER MECHANIC, MARKHAM, IL
Mechanical engineering, machining, woodworking, and everywhere where I need to measure with higher precision that doesn’t require a micrometer.

Q:
Please share with us any “non-standard” applications that calipers have been used for.

Answers:
Thin tipped Circlip Groove calipers can be used to measure component wall thicknesses from the thread root. Counting! Measure the average thickness of say a report. Measure the thickness of 1 years reports. You have a good idea of how many reports were generated.
~Roy M, RSM Quality Services, Poole, UK
There is no application which you can name it "non-standard" (unless you refer to use it for opening screws as a wrench!!).
~AARON M., Senior Calibration Technician, HAIFA, ISRAEL
We have trimmed and modified many calipers to build measurement devices for specific parts.

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of a caliper?
13 answers
Answers:
If your work is metric use a metric caliper. If it is standard use a standard caliper. Don't use combos, it's too easy to touch a button and change from standard to metric, and decimals didn't know the difference.
~BUTCH R, TRACTOR TRAILER MECHANIC, MARKHAM, IL
A bearing step diameter measured in caliper ultimately due to the negligence of the operator has resulted in loss of a very big value of material and to be redesigned to save the material.
~Jaganathan Krishna Murthy, Technical support, Singapore, Singapore
Expensive parts being scrapped from a caliper that was not checked for accuracy before being used. You must 0 these and make sure they are reading correctly.

Q:
What would your design or feature "wish list" be for this product?
15 answers
Answers:
Improving of small sizes internal measurements, depth measurements and including SPC features built in with no need to connect to a PC. The use of the "step gage" feature should be more explained. I've met a lot of people which even don't know the existence of this measurement mode.
~AARON M., Senior Calibration Technician, HAIFA, ISRAEL
Precise digital caliper with: 1) hard, strong and stable material, 2) English and metric system ,with 3) long lasting batteries and that is 3) water/oil proof for working in environment with coolant (cutting oil) like with CNC machines.
~Engineer, Redmond, WA
Easy single hand operation, good repeatability and realistic resolution, clear digital display. A fiducial load indication would be good for consistency of measurements.

Q:
Is there any advice you want to share with users to help them avoid common errors in selection or usage of calipers?
14 answers
Answers:
For critical inspections perform a gauge R&R study to ensure that the combined measurement uncertainty is acceptably within the tolerance of the dimension being measured. Calipers may not be an accurate enough instrument for the job - you may need plug gauges or a micrometer.
~Tom R, Production Engineer, Sydney, Australia
Just because it discriminates to within 0.01mm doesn't mean it is accurate to 0.01mm. Always check that it zeros before using it. Protect and keep clean. Avoid extremes of temperature and unnecessary immersions.
~Roy M, RSM Quality Services, Poole, UK
To train themselves to make accurate measurements, especially internal ones by measuring artifacts with a known size. To use more digital calipers - the readings are faster and the possible errors are less.

Buying AdviceTop

Q:
Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using calipers?
16 answers
Answers:
Go for one which has a screw-fixed battery compartment, the simple clip on covers are on a mission to escape at the earliest opportunity. Check the jaws close without any gaps visible when held up to light. Better quality steels resist corrosion, less affected by jaw wear.
~Rob M, Technical Support, Birmingham, UK
Make sure the measuring tips are hard and stable (ideally from hard stainless steel) and reading scale is easy to read. Note that the clipper might be accidentally dropped. Therefore select good constructions and strong durable material.
~Engineer, Redmond, WA
For heavy use or harsh environments buy good quality named products. For light or infrequent use buy "Far Eastern" cheaper products. In all cases use good quality batteries.
