Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to faulty or incompetent practices of aluminum extrusion services?
6 answers
Answers:
We suffered long delays on one project due to the problems encountered by the anodizer when using T6 alloy (always difficult), but we were assured it was not a problem. We also suffered delays on another project because the extruder could not produce the wall thickness they had promised. We had to increase the wall and therefore costs to achieve the dates.
~Cliff B, Facade Consultant - Architecture, Hong Kong, China
YES! I set up a whole department to produce panel side rails for cubicle furniture, and the operating instructions specifically said the material must be at room temperature before any machining was done. The crew worked on a truckload that had sat in sub-zero temps over a weekend. Terrible length problems!
~Paul S., Consultant, PDS Consulting, Engineering Consultant, Holland, MI

Buying AdviceTop

Q:
Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using aluminum extrusion services?
6 answers
Answers:
Obtain guarantees of delivery and surface finish before signing orders. Try to avoid buying mill finish extrusions and arranging finishing yourself. Try to buy finished material from the extruder, then the finish is his responsibility as well.
~Cliff B, Facade Consultant - Architecture, Hong Kong, China
Be very conversant in all mechanical aspects of the product. If you are from the Great White North - never machine aluminum that has not reached room temperatures and expect accuracy. [experience]
~Paul S., Consultant, PDS Consulting, Engineering Consultant, Holland, MI

Q:
Is there any advice you want to share with users to help them avoid common errors in selection or usage of aluminum extrusion services?
5 answers
Answers:
The company will never perform as well as it claims. Ask yourself if the the project will be OK if the company performs at 75% of promised level. If air freight is necessary to maintain production schedules, who will pay if delay is due to extruder or finisher.
~Cliff B, Facade Consultant - Architecture, Hong Kong, China
The only things that must be considered are; 1) the house must be respected by their peers; 2) they must be capable of showing their capabilities; 3) they must be able to show they are competitive and why.
~Paul S., Consultant, PDS Consulting, Engineering Consultant, Holland, MI
Always look for an existing profile before tooling up. Tooling is very expensive and many standard extrusions are available that may already fit the bill.
~Franz A, Design Engineer, Leamington Spa, England
Waste must be properly disposed.
~Ulysses Durano, Engineer, Dasmarinas City, Philippines
Don't buy low price...
