Q:
How far into the design process was the battery pack and assembly selection process begun?
14 answers
Answers:
Uniformity of each item of pack is extremely important and must be built into the design. Being batch process of manufacture, tolerance at each stage has to be the bare minimum and practicable with types of machine and also types of active materials.

When working plans were drawn up and power sources were considered. Weight was a major factor, continuity of reliable power with minimal energy loss.
~Research & Development, Perth, Australia
I am currently working on AUV and ROV, and it is the first thing taken into account. This limits the size, weight and autonomy.

Q:
Is product life cycle management an issue for the end-product containing the battery packs and assemblies? If it is implemented, how does product life cycle management affect the overall design process?
15 answers
Answers:
Take account of the life, the number of charge cycles, the conversion efficiency, safety, cost of purchase and operating costs throughout the lifetime. I know that it's easier and cheaper to produce motor fuel from the disposal of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, waste oils and fats, and boost diesel generator than to build a system for collecting energy from the sun, wind, and waste heat (thermoelectric). I am before deciding whether to drive the boat to use the electric motor or internal combustion (this may be an external combustion engine).

The product life is the most important value, it is basic value for the project and i need products with long life and stable capacity, because I need the same capacity during all time of life.
~Project Management, Zaragoza, Spain
Very important. Customer must get value for money. Life cycle cost has to match customer requirement. Comparative products of competitors are also a guideline in design.

Q:
Have you ever had quality/error problems with battery packs and assemblies from any source? If so, how and with whom did you resolve them?
6 answers
Answers:
I have and was able to resolve the problem with the process/production manager directly. A formal CAPA was not issued, but we resolved the problem in that fashion.

Q:
In what category of end-product applications do you use battery packs and assemblies (e.g., military/aerospace, consumer, medical, industrial control, etc.)
16 answers
Answers:
I am consumer. I am interested in battery pack collection and storage of energy (solar cells, wind energy, water energy, thermoelectric cells), and automatic drive boats and vehicles. I take into account issues of processing efficiency. Operational safety is very important as well as investment costs (profitability).

Q:
In your experience, which sources (including distributors) of battery packs and assemblies have provided the best overall support?
15 answers
Answers:
Batteries are not a good answer to our problems. We require a battery/charger combination for mounting on construction equipment. Energy harvesting is the answer but every energy form has it's problems. The ideal would be sourcing from vibration.

None, I've tried evaluation packs of some providers, but none about this channel provides them; I've found other providers at other channels, and i work with them

Q:
Which specific characteristics did you seek in your latest selection of battery packs and assemblies? Were you able to find products from more than one source that met the requirements?
12 answers
Answers:
A few producers LiFePO4 batteries, many distributors. critical parameters of safety, electrical capacity in relation to weight and volume, high load and short load times. limitation is the high initial price which partly compensates for long life. In consumer applications, this is a very big constraint
~Technical Support/Services, Warszawa, Poland
Uniformity of each cell. Internal resistance, discharge characteristics are key. Manufacturer must have built in control system for batching the products. More that one source- reputation/experience/past perforamance and price..

Q:
Before you started on your latest project incorporating battery packs and assemblies, is there one thing you wish you had known beforehand that would have made the process of employing the product easier?
8 answers
Answers:
Behavior of the battery when: long overloads (cooling), with fast loading (cooling), short-circuits (security), fire (protection), the gases and harmful substances to emit (the impact on humans.) Manufacturers do not give the behavior of the battery at low current load (lazy battery effect), loss of capacity as a function of storage time, the battery life as a function of operating temperature, the battery life as a function of discharging current.
~Technical Support/Services, Warszawa, Poland
Because what we would like is not available we resorted to standard high energy primary cells and we have an unacceptable battery replacement requirement. If there is a manufacturer that could provide a vibration harvesting module that could supply 100 mW at 3.5 volts they are keeping it a well protected secret.
~General Corporate Mgmt, Seaford, Australia
Hospital waste disposal companies have varying rules for the acceptable disposal of batteries. Each customer may have different requirements.
