Pipe Hangers and Conduit Hangers Information
Pipe hangers and pipe supports are used to support hanging pipe. They include clevis hangers, beam clamps, pipe clamps, brackets and pipe straps.
Types
Common hanger types include band hangers, clevis hangers, j-hangers, roller hangers, split ring hangers, spring hangers and u-hangers. A band hanger is a type of pipe hanger that supports the pipe on a continuous strap of metal whose ends are joined at the top by a supporting rod.

Without a doubt LISEGA has the most innovative hangers and supports. Most other manufacturers have simply copied the old Grinnell designs dating back to the 1920's. LISEGA has a patented constant hanger that truly remains constant throughout its travel range, and the vast range of load adjustability at the site allows it to be adapted to future site changes without having to be replaced. In addition, they have many unique clamp designs that are both stronger and lighter than competitive designs.

Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of pipe hangers and pipe supports?

In cooling applications in a freezer cell hanging pipes under a hanger. The moisture in the air condensates on the hanger and drips through the isolation. The condensate causes strong corrosion on the metal pipes. In these applications it is better (a must) to place the pipes on a support avoiding condensate dripping in the isolation.

Due to wrong selection and implementation of hangers and supports pipes get out of supports laterally. Also shoes get out of supports and restrict return of pipes when pipe contracts. This can result in load on pipe and puncturing/rupturing of pipe and based on size and service can result in a disaster.

Forgetting to unblock springs after hydrostatic testing has caused problems with localized pipe stresses. Improper installation has caused major damage to piping and insulation.

Like sealed bearings if "sealed spring boxes" type hangers. Observation is that springs need maintenance against rusting, and they get stuck in a position and the hanger just does not work.

Don't use all-thread hangers. They tend to fall off over the years. Use dummy legs resting on structural steel. Seal weld pipe shoes to prevent crevice corrosion that you get when you skip weld. Don't clamp on pipe shoes or hangers because it sets up crevice corrosion.

Try to understand functioning of hangers for proper selection of them. Keep in mind maintaining them is equally important after installing, and importance of restraint and guide and anchor type of support supplementing hangers.

Price is important, but do not forget about the long term costs associated with product reliability, maintenance, installation, and the ability of the pipe support vendor to provide the support you need, when you need it.

Choose at forehand some sizes that will do the job. Avoid using all the sizes available in the documentation. You will be killed by that.

Some hangers are factory set with some pins which need to be removed before putting hanger into service. If not removed, the hanger just does not work.

Talk to your vendors about appropriate selection methods. Some vendors provide complimentary selection software as a reference tool.
