How to Select Hydraulic Fittings             Image Credit: Parker Hannifin | Grainger Industrial Supply | Stucchi, Inc.   Hydraulic fittings are parts used to connect hoses, pipes, and tubes in hydraulic systems. Hydraulic equipment generally operates under high pressures and is often not a fixed system. Consequently, hydraulic fittings need to be strong, versatile, and reliable to operate safely and effectively in their respective...

I used a Parker NPT two-way ball valve to supply surfactant (fire extinguishing foam) from a subfloor tank to MD-10 fuselage main deck cargo container penetrators. Use of a two way valve permitted both tank servicing and operation. (Operation occurs when the detector system activates the fire extinguishing system and pressurizes the surfactant tank and selected penetrator). This type of valve is unavailable as a normal SAE/MS/AN design for aircraft. A non-aircraft item was more difficult to certify with the FAA when obtaining the Fire Detection and Suppression System STC (Supplementary Type Certificate) for the MD-10.

Usually we use hydraulic hose with oppressed fittings(DKO-L)+fitting(screwed in body cut-ring type)+body(valve, pump, etc). A company which suggests simple hose (without oppressed fittings)+fitting(collet-type fixing)+body - will be gold nominated in market.

For all common NPT fittings and valves to have an equivalent SAE/MS/AN fitting. Sometimes only an NPT design is available and NPT fittings are not normally used on aircraft. An intermixed design (NPT& MS) is not desirable, but sometimes unavoidable.

Obtain a fitting measuring & angle kit from a fitting manufacturer like Parker so the size & angle can be determined accurately. Applications requiring stainless steel materials and high temperature hoses are special order and long delivery so plan ahead, otherwise your project will be stopped dead.
~Mel R, Instrument Engineer, Marissa, IL
A lot of fittings look very similar. Always have a thread identification kit handy and if in doubt try screwing your fitting in to see if it is correct, and always make sure the rated working pressure on the fitting is suitable for the hydraulic system you're working on.
~Stu S, Project Manager, Perth, Australia
M = Material of the fitting to meet the pressures and compatibility with the fluid E = End connection = Sealing method = Pipe, Flare, Flareless or O-Ring S = Size S = Shape = Straight, 45, 90, Tee, Branch
