Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of mechanical vacuum pumps and systems?

A mining company experimenting with a process to produce large volumes of frozen brine ( salt ) solution for use in cooling underground mining operations used multistage Roots pumps to produce vacuum to which the solution was exposed. Evaporation resulted in the solution freezing. Unfortunately the salt solution resulted in the expensive Roots pumps rusting beyond repair in a short time. Had the process been correctly understood, a more suitable system would have been used, avoiding a costly mistake.

Be aware and careful of any back flow issues/requirements for your pump. We had an incident where the oil from the roughing pump back filled into our main vacuum line and caused us to shutdown everything and do a thorough cleaning. Also, make sure somewhere in the vacuum system there is a fill port for when you bring the system back up to ambient. Ideally you want this to be supplied with dry air and pressurize with this supply, not by sucking air back in through the pump.

Single mechanical sealed pumps causes greater chance of seal leak than double sealed pumps, so don’t choose the former for cost saving.

Customers often do not fully understand their process requirements and demand unrealistic vacuum pressures. An example is the transformers oil processing industry, essentially a drying application where large volumes of water are involved and processed through the rotary vane pumps. Customers often don't understand the balance between final vacuum and the need for vacuum pumps that can handle the vapor load.

Do not just look at the lowest possible vacuum spec for a pump or system. Just because this number is below your requirement, other factors contribute to what you can actually achieve and sometimes just meeting the requirement is not sufficient. Definitely contact a manufacturer representative for help in selecting the right pump.

Consider performance at your desired vacuum, some do better than other at different ranges and rebuild ouch factor, a Busch 50 hp rebuild is 40k, new is 50k. Do not rely on local distributors to be technically proficient on the other side of the zero, I have seen costly errors in engineering from them.

Go for comparatively lesser speed machines. Though they are big in size, they are more trouble free. Also go for ‘Over-Hung’ type rather than ‘Simply Supported’ type
