Do you have any advice for people relative to buying or using USB products?

Go for it. As I have mentioned, if you're like me and like to tinker with your machine, the ease of disconnecting and reconnecting is great and for the most part these things work as well as or better than older technologies.

Make sure there are redundancy mechanisms in place when time critical events of information are passing through the USB.

Check with your pc the amount you can use, the rating ie 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, amount of storage required.

Nothing more than common sense really. How many ports do you really need. Most important is do you know what you're doing, do you have any technical aptitude at all. If not, ask for help.

Cable Length can be an issue, Repeaters don't always work with operating systems.
