What new technologies are influencing D-Sub Connector design?

SMT is forcing connectors to fit in smaller areas on PCBs. New digital medias require smaller connectors and fine-pitch spacing, however, D-Sub connectors still offer better robustness and isolation.

Harsh environments require them to be Sealed. Medical safety standards are requiring higher voltage withstand testing and sometimes special insulator materials to achieve the test specifications.
