Q:
Please share with us any “non-standard” applications that a hydraulic pump has been used for.
26 answers
Answers:
I have seen fluid pumps set up to compress air on tire trucks. PTO's have been used for this. I also have seen hydraulic pumps rated and designed for bunker oil used to pump bentonite in mining and cable following proceedures. I also have seen v 8 engines set up to rund fuel on the left bank and the right bank used as an air compressor. I am no longer amazed at the creativity of low budget mechanics undertaking less than perfect solutions to "git er done" when the show has to go on.
~Scott H, Project Manager, Kelso, WA

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of a hydraulic pump?
20 answers
Answers:
Too numerous to list in detail. I have seen pumps that have literally blown apart due to over pressure. Burned up due to poor system design and pump choice. The list goes on. Not paying attention to possible power surge type demands and equipment use. It should be pointed out that allot of these issues center around not just the incorrect usage of the pump but poor system design.
~Rod R, Design Engineer, Victoria, Canada, B. C.
Yes we have seen many. Most system designers forget the fact that when using water glycol as a system media. that all components pressure rating and speed rating are reduced.
~Lyle S, Marketing/Sales, Houston, TX
1 - Hydraulic pump too small to run a system, ie, flow volume too small resulting in some circuits not functioning or slowing down.
~Anthony R, Maintenence manager, Bogor, Indonesia
