Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to faulty or incompetent practices of coating services?
27 answers
Answers:
Well, it was more funny than disastrous, but it did result in a dramatic delay of a project, cost overruns, and performance penalties. An application of coal tar epoxy was to be applied to both the OD and ID of some Steel Line Pipe for an unusual Petro-Chemical project. The company that did it had no prior experience with coal tar epoxy or Tubular Goods. The OD was sprayed at non-controlled environmental conditions resulting in a horrendously ugly finish and the ID was actually applied with old kitchen mops. Removal of this application and reapplying by a competent company took weeks.
~Don C, Quality Control, Pittsburgh, PA
Recently one valve major has specified in his spec that Nickel Electroplating of Thickness 280 microns on a cast iron body. This is technically not possible. Even if we do this, the coating will peel off. This will make disastrous results if the Ni chips peel off and go into the control valve system.
~Ram Rajasekharan, Managing Partner - GE Process, Chennai, India
Many disastrous mistakes occur due to incompetent management. Our company's had a few fires in our painting lines caused by mistakes of judgment for maintenance required. No one can guarantee our system and/or equipment is zero defect, frequent service and visual inspection of noise, smell, wrong air stream...etc., might be the signs of impending disaster. One of our painting lines requires weekly maintenance for exhaust ducts of painting spray booth. In our holidays of Chinese Lunar New Years, due to the operators not on duty, management was forced by supply pressure delayed this job for a couple of days in weekend, which caused a fire in the plant. Not only our supply cause trouble, we lost orders from customers, too.
~Charles Hsu, General Management, Hsin-chu, Taiwan
Coating adhesion, or lack thereof, are the primary cause of coating failure. A freshly coated part almost always looks good. After coating, it is too late to solve any substrate preparation related problems. You and the service provider need to do your "homework" before applying the coating. After applying the coating, it is too late to resolve coating problems.
~Lawrence L., Research & Development, West Chester, PA
Previous employer is in a law suit for failing to comply with AAMA 2605 standards when applying Duranar Paints. Not using chrome phosphorus pretreatment prior to painting. This caused the paint to flake off during production.
~James B, Project Manager, Youngstown, OH
Not cleaning the surface or using the wrong cleaners and not rinsing them off properly will cause the powder coat paint to come off in time. Disastrous when the machine needs to be disassembled, sandblasted and re-coated.
~Erik L, Owner, Montreal, Canada
Yes, One of our vendor used more paint thickness than recommended by manufacturer for internal coating of vessel and we observed peeling of paint and cracks after putting the vessel in service.
~Engineer, Canonsburg, PA
Wrong mixing of components of coating, not properly homogenizing the coating matrix, not taking care where to put unused coating during coating and after coating procedure.
~Vipin P, Technical Support, Ankleshwar, India
Coating after recoat max recoat time, coating over unprepared surface, coating using too much solvents, mixing product uneven.
~Santino Chami, Managing Director, Port of Spain, Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago
Yes many, too many to list, mostly due to rushing the projects, which mainly comes from " the powers above" .
~Nik Cuttelle, Director of an marine coatings and application company, Antibes, France
Yes. Too numerous to mention. Fortunately, these errors were made by competitors and not our organization.
