Such as GE Texaco coal gasification process, valve service: coal slurry feed to gasifier ioslation ball valve. Fluid: coal slurry, Solid Wt.Percent, 60% design Temp.: 350degC Design press.:9MPag Valve size: 10" Stroke time<3S Valve type:Metal seat ball valve, Trunnion type, full bore. Body material :WC6 with surplus liner,thickness>3mm Ball and seat: 316SS HVOF. Packing: Graphite NACE MR0175 material. SIL3 is required
~Jerry HE, Project Manager, BEIJING, CHINA
A ball valve with the ball not fully bored through used as a "dump" valve to remove sand etc from the bottom of a cyclone separator. The valve was fitted with a 180 degree actuator and timer set to dump the deposits. The valve body was drilled for a flush jet to wash the valve ball pocket when it was in the dump position to clear the contents.
~Peter Trevor, Engineer, Whakatane, New Zealand
Using ball valve in heavy steam applications which globe valve was invented for. I used in drum level control of a biler in sugar industry factory, located in Egypt and the controllability of the valve was very nice and attractive even better than globe valve.
~Sherif N, Lecturer, Cairo / Giza, Egypt
I can't think of any "non-standard" applications that I have specified ball valves for ... I have used them on vacuum systems for chip collection as positive shutoff valves (not for throttling).

Q:
Do you know of any disastrous mistakes that occurred due to the incorrect usage of ball valves?
17 answers
Answers:
When using ball valves on chemicals that can decompose the ball will trap a pocket of the liquid in the ball when in the closed position. This can result in the valve breaking under the pressure caused by the decomposition. Drilling a relief hole in the ball so that the pressure can relieve either to waste or back into the process is a simple solution, especially if using plastic valves.
~Peter Trevor, Engineer, Whakatane, New Zealand
For some easy crystallized and polymerized fluid, it is not suitable to take standard ball valve due to a BIG cavity between ball and body. Plug valve is a good choice. If temp. and pressure is very high, you can consider to take top entry ball valve with purge port to avoid the error.
~Jerry HE, Project Manager, BEIJING, CHINA
Some ball valves handle will corrode easily compared to the body . That will cause interrupted operation due to non-availability of better handle.
~Engr. Sansin G. Dio D, Sales Engineer, CEBU, Philippines
Not disastrous, but I have had valves leak because the pressure was causing the seats to shift.
~Process Engineer, Milford, OH
Yes, ball valves not having static discharge facility and leading to in pipe explosion.
~Jamshed Bokdawalla, Marketing/Sales, Pune, India
Many. Most of them have been due to incorrect specification of seat materials.
~Jeff S, General Manager, Perth, Australia
Miss using of valve parts in dismantling may cause damage of the valve.
~Sherif N, Lecturer, Cairo / Giza, Egypt
