VME, VPX and VXI Products Information

VME, VPX and VXI products are designed for use with a VME, VPX or VXI bus. The VersaModule Eurocard bus (VMEbus) provides asynchronous transfer, an addressing range between 16 and 32 bits, data path width between 8 and 32 bits, and a 40-MBps bandwidth. VPX is an ANSI standard based on the VMEbus that supports switched fabric using a high-speed connector. VMEbus extensions for Instrumentation (VXI) define a multivendor instrument-on-a-card standard for industrial applications. Specifications for VME, VPX and VXI products include product type, technology, form factor and operating system. 

Product Types

There are many different product types for VME, VPX and VXI products. Choices include controllers and processors, extenders, switches, bus interfaces and adapters, power interface boards (PBs), and load boards. VME, VPX and VXI controllers are designed to control the data transfer between devices in the network, the status of interrupts, registers, and triggers. They are also used to control networked instruments for testing and analysis. VME, VPX and VXI extenders are used to improve or extend the functions of the standard VME, VPX, and VXI cards. VME, VPX and VXI switches are VME, VPX and VXI products for connecting test points or devices to instruments for testing, measuring, or system monitoring. 

 

VME, VPX and VXI products include bus interface and adapters, power interface boards (PBs), and load boards. VME, VPX and VXI bus interfaces and bus adapters allow the VME, VPX, or VXI system to communicate with other devices or systems. VME, VPX and VXI power interface boards are used for the power section of the backplane. They facilitate pluggable power supplies, headers, and utility connectors. VME, VPX and VXI load boards are used to test the capabilities of system specifications and capabilities. For example, a load board can be used to test the cooling capabilities of a system by applying the load to the power supply and then creating the necessary heat to test chassis cooling. Other VME, VPX and VXI products are also available. 

 

In addition to product type, VME, VPX and VXI products differ according to technology, form factor, and operating system. Choices for technology include VMEbus, VME64, VME64X, VME160, VME320, VPX, and VXI. Form factors are measured in millimeters (mm) and have lettered sizes A, B, C and D. VME, VPX and VXI products support most standard computer operating systems.
