UV Disinfection and UVGI Sanitization Systems Information
UV Disinfection and UVGI Sanitation Systems Information
UV disinfection and UVGI sanitization systems use ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) to sanitize air, water, transparent materials, or surfaces. They differ in terms of type, lamp specifications, and features. With regard to application type, there are three main choices for UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers. Air treatment systems or UV air purifiers are designed to treat air, gas, or vapor streams. Surface disinfection systems and part sterilizers are designed to destroy microbes on the surfaces of parts or materials, and within transparent components. UV water treatment filters and systems are designed to treat water or liquid streams.
In addition to application type, UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers differ in terms of configuration. UV chambers consist of a power supply, light source, and enclosure. UV conveyors or continuous systems also contain a power supply and light source, along with a conveying unit and an enclosure open on both ends. UV flood lamps provide a broad or wide beam of light and are available in modular designs. By contrast, focused UV lamps provide a narrow or collimated beam of light. Portable or handheld UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers can be carried manually. With HVAC UV systems, the air stream or dust particles are disinfected as the UV light irradiates the air traveling through the ducting.
Configurations for UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers include process or line-mounted, spot or wand, UV standards and references, and wall or ceiling-mounted systems. Process or line-mounted UV systems contain a power supply, light source, and flange cartridge mounting or fitting for attachment to the process line, web system, coating line, water line, and conveyor line or tank. Spot or wand systems are benchtop units that provide a UV beam with a small spot size for selective curing applications. UV standards and reference sources include any source that can provide a reference for the system, or comparison of a material or component. With wall-mounted and ceiling- mounted UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers, the air stream is disinfected as the UV light irradiates the air circulating through the room.
Lamp Specifications and Product Features
Lamp specifications and product features are important to consider when selecting UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers. Lamp specifications cover spectral range, lamp or output power, and lamp intensity. Choices for spectral range include UVA, UVB, UVC, UVV, and full-spectrum. UVC, the germicidal or short wave UV band, produces ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) that inactivates pathogens by destroying their DNA and RNA, rendering the microbes impotent. In terms of product features, some UV disinfection systems and UVGI sanitizers are equipped with a computer interface, hour meter or timer, internal filter, or LED source. Other are pulsed or NIST-traceable, or can feed multiple wands or light pipes.
