Mold fabrication servicesMold making services are manufacturers that fabricate custom designed molds and dies for plastics, rubber, and metal casting applications.

Mold makers specialize in the design and construction of application- and industry-specific tools. These services provide expertise to take a component design concept and build a tool to produce that part. Staff work closely with customers to determine design specifications, manufacturing technology, and number of cavities to satisfy the customer's production needs. Mold makers often work hand-in-hand with design engineers to fine tune product designs so molds are optimal for a customer's casting applications. Many mold making companies offer these services, which differ by molding process.

Mold makers leverage knowledge of molding processes and their internal machining services to build molds. Typical machining services include: CNC horizontal boring, CNC vertical milling, lathe work, gun drilling, and a variety of grinding and polishing techniques. Some providers also offer more specialized services such as electrical discharge machining (EDM) and coating and plating services.

Recently, 3D printers have been used to create prototype molds. 3D-printed molds are not production molds, but they allow designers and manufacturers to perform inexpensive functional testing without investing in tooling. Challenges in process, part geometry, and choice of plastic can be discovered early. This can reduce costly, time-consuming mold corrections later in the development phase.

Computer aided design or drafting (CAD) develops products quickly and accurately. Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) fabricates products directly from CAD outputs. Mold making services that provide design assistance help with concepts, manufacturing costs, manufacturing techniques, and material considerations, including sourcing. They may also assist with upgrading, redesigning, reevaluating, or modernizing existing products to increase performance and reduce manufacturing costs. Some mold making providers create models of finished products before investing in tooling. Others can add textures for functional or cosmetic purposes. Mold making providers may offer on-site manufacturing of limited quantities, or produce prototypes for visual or tryout inspection.

Standards

Mold making services adhere to several certifications. ISO 9001:2000 establishes requirements for company quality management systems and covers standards ranging from manufacturing to services such as design, development, production, and installation. AS 9000 is a set of quality guidelines and requirements published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in cooperation with major aerospace manufacturers. AS 9000 is based on ISO 9001 but maintains a focus on the aerospace industry. QS 9000 is a quality standard for suppliers of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Corporation. QS 9000 is based on the 1994 edition of ISO 9001, but contains requirements that are particular to the automotive industry. Specifically, QS 9000 applies to suppliers of production materials, production and service parts, heat-treating, painting and plating, and other finishing services.

Applications

Mold making services provide tooling to a range of industries that includes aerospace, automotive, food processing, optical, medical, and pharmaceutical companies. Mold making services also manufacture products for companies that provide electric and electronic components and semiconductors.
