IC Modems Information
IC modems enable computers to transmit data over telephone lines or via wireless signals. Modem is a contraction of the words modulator-demodulator. Since computer information is digital data and information transmitted over the telephone lines is transmitted in analog waves, a modem converts between these two forms.
The speed at which a modem transmits data is measured in units called bits per second or bps. A cable modem IC uses a range of frequencies. When attached to a single cable, cable modems can use the same frequency band, using a low-level media access protocol to allow them to work together with in the same channel.
Types of Modems
Wireless modems transmit information that is modulated onto a carrier frequency to allow many simultaneous wireless communications links to work simultaneously on different frequencies.
Wireline modems deliver two or four wire operations and supports dial up, leased line, or dedicated circuits. This is ideally suited for remote network management and "lights out" operations, applications demanding reliability. Other types of IC modems are commonly available.
There are several ways in which IC modems function. All IC modems require a mu-controller. IC modems functions include modulation-demodulation, transmitting and receiving filtering, serial-port interfacing, asynchronous-to-synchronous conversion circuitry, scrambling and descrambling, and clock generation.
All modem functions have been incorporated in a single IC modem that operates at 1200 bits per second (bps) or 2400 bps. IC modems have basically three modem chips: a TP560x for external modems, a 560i for internal PCI implementations, and an IP568 for onboard memory.
A modem chip is used to make a hardware-controller based modem. A modem circuit is a method of connecting two computers together to transfer files is by a direct modem to modem connection. IC modems function in the vast majority of operating systems including WinCE, Linux, and VxWorks, thereby making it useable in a wide variety of devices or appliances.

Systems ranging from smart soda machines to remote data-acquisition systems make good use of modems. IC modems support applications such as voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and set/speakerphones, telephone answering machines, and caller ID.
IC modems have the advantage of long range data integrity, fast and easy integration, low cost and power and advanced networking, and security. IC modems are the most popular means of Internet access. IC modems should comply with IEEE standards.
