Everything You Need to Know About Rotary Encoders
Maybe you weren't afraid to ask, but you'd rather not guess which features matter most when selecting rotary optical encoders. This source offers insider tips on everything from optics and bearings, to covers and connectors. It will also help you select shafts with low runnout, or make shaft seals last longer.

Uncommon Path to Novel Sensors
Shut-out on a sensor search? That dilemma led Rockwell to "out of box" thinking and in-house development of some novel creations. One: a speedier, higher resolution optical sensor that measures gearmotor torque, indirectly, looking at torsional strain through a photo-elastic sleeve. Another, also using optical technologies: a compact, high-frequency current sensor for embedding in motors.

Auto Measuring of Auto Parts
An auto maker required tolerances of four microns on bores in aluminum castings — 5x better than variations typical in volume machining. Their solution: a new 50 nm resolution XY stage that features cross roller linear bearings. Attaching stylus probes to the linear motor stage automates measuring that was previously done manually.

Lightweight, but Carries a Big Load
Low-distortion aluminum alloy gives this compact rotary stage its trim 6.2 kg size, but also the ability to handle loads up to 300 N. The stage is driven by a stepper motor, giving it positional accuracy of 0.1°, repeatability of less than 0.05°, and surface run out <0.02 mm.
