New PV Product Line Called Multi-Link

Shoals Technologies Group and Multi-Contact AG have collaborated to bring the best offer of both companies to PV customers globally by introducing the Multi-Link product line to the market.

This new product line will allow either the panel manufacturer or the field integrator/end user to adapt the module to create a custom solution based on the needs of the installation. The most innovative feature of the Multi-Link line is the universal interface allowing for modular DC/DC optimization, DC/AC conversion, while also having the ability to act as a standard junction box when no power electronics are required.

Cree's CMF20120D Silicon Carbide Power MOSFET
Digi-Key Corporation
Cree's CMF20120D Silicon Carbide Power MOSFET

Cree's SiC MOSFET, the CMF20120D, which is available at Digi-Key, provides blocking voltages up to 1200 V with an on-state resistance (RDSon) of just 80 mΩ at 25° C.

Setting Cree's SiC MOSFET apart from comparable silicon devices, the RDSon remains below 100 mΩ across its entire operating temperature range. This consistency of performance characteristics across operating conditions, along with a true MOSFET device architecture (normally-off), makes it ideal for power electronics switching circuits.

The CMF20120D SiC MOSFET provides significant advantages over silicon devices, enabling unprecedented system efficiency and/or reduced system size, weight, and cost through its higher frequency operation.

Alternative Method to Determine Total Porosity

The skeletal volume of a solid body excludes pores as well as the void spaces between particles. Envelope volume includes all pores and voids. While these measurements are each important on their own merit, their combination also allows one to accurately calculate percent porosity and total pore volume of a body.

Micromeritics' AccuPyc II 1340 Gas Pycnometer provides skeletal volume and density measurements on a wide variety of materials having volumes from 0.01 to 350 cm³.

Micromeritics' GeoPyc 1360 Pycnometer determines the envelope volume and density of monolithic samples, as well as the bulk volume and density of powdered materials.

  Revolutionary Eddy Current Technology

Micro-Epsilon has developed a new manufacturing technology for eddy current sensors — Embedded Coil Technology (ECT). Using our proprietary ECT, the sensor is embedded in an inorganic substrate material, providing excellent temperature and form stability. Conventionally wire-wound sensor coils are replaced by ECT sensors. ECT technology pushes the limits of traditional sensors to new levels for maximum integration, unmatched stability, and extreme environments — without compromising existing benefits. Learn more.

Textiles Contain Bomb Blasts
  Textiles Contain Bomb Blasts

Air travel could become safer, sooner, if recent textile bag tests are any indication. The Fly-Bag, designed for pre-loading with luggage before placing in aircraft cargo holds, succeeded in containing several small, escalating bomb blasts. The big design idea, besides multi-layers: coating internal fabric with elastomers; and fabrics impregnated with shear thickening fluids.

Instruments May Lose Their Knobs
  Instruments May Lose Their Knobs

Many test engineers can't feel comfortable with instruments that don't have the "hands-on" feel of knobs and switches. Yet according to this blog entry from Martin Rowe at Test & Measurement World, the upcoming generation of younger engineers want instruments that offer the touchscreens and other conveniences that have become so ubiquitous on tablet computers and smartphones. In fact, one app already available for the iPhone turns it into an oscilloscope. As always, users expect their instruments' operating environments to resemble those with which they are already familiar.

Spectrometer Goes Grocery Shopping
  Spectrometer Goes Grocery Shopping

Miniaturized mass spectrometer escapes the lab and goes to the grocery store. Researchers identified specific chemical residues on apples and oranges (or the lack thereof on organic produce) within minutes, right in the produce section without having to peel or otherwise prepare a sample of the fruit. The system has potential for use all through the food delivery system, as the researchers explain, to provide assurances of food safety. The time savings in bringing the instrument to the produce could be significant. Also, if the system could be miniaturized further it might be possible to build into mobile devices the size of a Blackberry.

CHALLENGE-OF-THE-MONTH

Magnetic Monopole

Americium-241 is a good alpha emitter. If you isolate a gram of Americium-241, it emits alpha particles in all directions. An alpha particle is a positive charge because it consists of two protons and two neutrons bound together. The emission of alpha particles by the gram of Americium-241 produces lines of current radiating from the center of the source. Each line of current generates a magnetic field. The source, then, is a magnetic monopole. How can this be?

How to Reduce Size and Increase Performance in AC-DC Power Supply Design

"Improvements in AC/DC power supply design are evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. It's easy to settle for tried-and-tested approaches because no one new design technique is likely to yield great benefits. The design challenge is to establish what small enhancements can be made in various parts of the design to achieve worthwhile improvements in power density, efficiency, and EMC performance."
