Climate Initiatives Predicted to Fail

Climate Initiatives Predicted to FailA recent report from research firm Datamonitor says not to expect the debate concerning global warming and best courses of action to be resolved any time soon. Significant worldwide initiatives would require cooperation among virtually all of the major industrialized nations and this does not appear to be in the offing. The United States will not agree to a deal without Chinese involvement; considered very unlikely. The Datamonitor report gives an overview of current developments in the global debate on climate change and the timeline for future U.S. and European initiatives. It also assesses the future role of nuclear power in the global energy mix.

Outsourcing Power Generation

Outsourcing Power GenerationPower companies in highly populated and environmentally conscious areas like California find it hard to get new power generation projects approved. As reported by Power Engineering, Southern California Edison's solution is to significantly expand long-term power contracts offered to independent power producers willing to invest in new power plants serving Southern California.

Get Smart

Get SmartThe first step to a smart electrical distribution system is upgrading from electromechanical to electronic devices. The next step is gathering data from those devices, and the final step is taking action based on these data. T&D World shows how Duke Energy-Carolinas plans to add intelligence to their distribution system.

Transformer Efficiency Standards Proposed

Transformer Efficiency Standards ProposedThe Edison Electric Institute says that there are about 40 million distribution transformers in the U.S., so even small efficiency improvements would save tremendous amounts of energy. Existing efficiency is about 98% and a new standard would increase this to between 98.73 and 99.36%, saving approximately 8.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
