Rethinking Pneumatic Servos

Rethinking Pneumatic Servos "Precise and responsive motion in real-world industrial applications?" For most engineers, this infers a stepper motor or electric servo. Few would think of servo control with pneumatic actuators due to the "soft" performance reputation of pneumatic servos. Yet, this report and video suggest a closer look. Read how high-bandwidth servo valves, digital signal processors, and other improvements in flow control are changing the performance qualities of pneumatic servos.

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering AwardOn Wednesday, October 10, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to members of the original DynaTAC engineering team in honor of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the first portable, hand-held telephone.

This small band of engineers in Applied Research at the Communications Division of Motorola helped shape telecommunications history. Their work resulted in the DynaTAC, a portable, hand-held, mobile telephone showcased to the world in April 1973, and the precursor of today's cellular telephone.

DynaTAC Primary Designer Donald Linder accepted the award on the team's behalf at a ceremony held at Millennium Park in Chicago. John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA (The Wireless Association) and Tracey Koziol, corporate vice president of Mid and High Tier Devices for Motorola, were on hand to recognize the team for their remarkable accomplishment. Functional Pneumatic Prototypes

Functional Pneumatic PrototypesComponent manufacturer Festo is no stranger to additive manufacturing processes for prototyping parts in plastic. More recently, the company has been testing aluminum alloys on laser-based additive machines. The results, Festo reports, are "pretty darn close" to production metal parts. Even so, direct digital manufacturing of metal parts is ten years away. Design News explains...

Speed up Cylinder Sizing

Speed up Cylinder Sizing How? Automation Studio™ fluid power component sizing software provides calculation sheets for cylinders, flow controls, pumps, valves, and other pneumatic and/or hydraulic parts. Once the design process is sped up, use the package to optimize your entire workflow.

Clean Valves are Particle Free

Clean Valves are Particle Free Rather than a spool or plunger, this line of pneumatic solenoid valves features an armature/spring design. No sliding parts means low power consumption and longer life. The design also contributes to clean operation in oxygen-enriched environments extremely sensitive to contamination.

Into the Arms of Robots

Into the Arms of Robots Because of their low weight (about 1 oz, or 30 g), and small size (10 mm wide), Series LS04 Air Valves are meant for robotic arms and similar dynamic applications. Features include a modular manifold capability of 24 valve stations, a 0-50 C (32-122 F) temperature range, and polymer design. Get all the specs...

Compressed Air Troubles

Compressed Air Troubles Start-up failure; high reject rates; reduced service life; frequent filter replacement... Compressed air problems can cause trouble throughout the plant, and any number of factors can affect the quality of compressed air. This graphic brochure from SMC lists the ills, describes their causes, and offers the cure: an air purification equipment selection table and guide.

Clean Air Insurance

Clean Air Insurance Described as a "supplement" to centralized cleaning units, this in-line dryer removes moisture, oil, and unwanted particles from the air just before end use. Example: one model mounts ahead of air tools to deliver clean air and a fine mist of lubrication.

Vacuum Choices for Material Handling

Vacuum Choices for Material Handling Beginning with the decision to install a centralized or decentralized system, designing the correct vacuum system for a specific material handling operation is difficult. Andy Lovell, an application engineer at PIAB USA, walks readers through critical design considerations including flow restriction, the relationship between energy input and vacuum output, and new pump technologies.

Intelligent Vacuum Control

Intelligent Vacuum Control Here's an electronic motor control/software package, intended for motor-driven centrifugal vacuum and pump systems, that promises to cut energy costs by "as much as 71%." Changing the frequency of the motor supply voltage varies the connected motor operating speed; a closer match between motor output and load generates the savings.
