Maintaining Well Integrity at a Distance

Maintaining Well Integrity at a Distance Operational integrity was the catch phrase at this year's Offshore Technology Conference. Depending on who you talk to, approaches to maintaining well integrity range from process and technology management to improved maintenance and control systems. One potential barrier is the trend towards unmanned deep water facilities. With no one on site to keep an eye on things, remotely operated vehicles, robots, and other human proxies will play an increasing role. Does safety always demand a human presence? The Journal of Petroleum Technology looks at the technology and risks of drilling at a distance.

Treading Softly

Treading Softly With the growing concern about potential seismic signal effects on wildlife, any opportunity to reduce signal strength yet maintain accurate data is a good thing. This paper describes the advantages gained by running a deeper, yet smaller array. Low frequency signal strength diminishes, but there are several ways to compensate.

Those Pesky Impurities

Those Pesky Impurities Not very long ago, gas producers just worried about reducing sulfur. As feedstock quality declines and environmental restrictions increase, paying more attention to minor impurities such as mercury, ammonia, and mercaptans has become more important. This overview of gas processing options is an excellent introduction to dealing with impurities while on a budget.

New Fluids, New Uses

New Fluids, New Uses Controlling circulation loss is a traditional role of drilling fluids. In a fractured well, the right fluid can also help strengthen the bore, according to Drilling Contractor. Depleted and mixed pressure wells are prime candidates for these specialized fluids. Choose carefully; mud chemistry and environmental risk need to be considered too.

Drilling Success, Russian Style

Drilling Success, Russian Style Does the world's fourth largest oil producer have special insight into staying competitive? In the case of Russia's Rosneft, well drilling and completion management software is a critical part of profitability. A program to optimize geosteering and side-tracking activities also adds to the bottom line, according to Rogtec Magazine.

Moving Intelligence Downhole

Moving Intelligence Downhole Controlling water and gas infiltration in a mixed zone reservoir is difficult, and especially so in horizontal wells. Rather than rely on passive flow control techniques, one Malaysian operator chose to build intelligence into their system. World Oil explains how a combination of flow control valves, pressure sensors, and isolation packers achieved great results.

Smart Choices in Artificial Lift

Smart Choices in Artificial Lift Artificial lift solutions have progressed far beyond the days of donkey pumps, yet these workhorses are still a good choice for simple wells. The picture gets more complicated when heavy oil, high solids, and the presence of gas need to be accommodated. E&P Magazine looks at technical and economic factors affecting pump selection while a supporting video explains operation of a gas-assisted plunger lift.

The Inertial Pig

The Inertial Pig Not only is it dark inside a pipeline, but GPS signal reception typically fails too. So when EngeMOVI needed to map potential corrosion sites in buried lines, they built an inertial navigation system into their inspection pig. The prototype fits a 14 in. pipe and can record up to 180-miles of data.

Lightning Gets Sneaky

Lightning Gets Sneaky There are many causes of fuel storage tank fires, but lighting strikes are considered a common culprit. Overhead catenary wires provide minimal protection, and they can actually make the situation worse, according to Tank Storage Magazine. When wires interrupt and re-route a strike, secondary arcing will appear in the most unexpected places.
