Wind-powered Winnipeg

Wind-powered Winnipeg Winnipeg's downtown skyline is about to change. Engineers hope to top every high-rise with a wind turbine. Silently capturing energy to power the offices below, this windy idea is not the stuff of fantasy. Wind turbine power is already making waves in Bahrain and in Dubai while massive propeller turbines supply up to 15% renewable energy for a few select power needs. But instead of propeller style turbines, engineers from the University of Manitoba's Global Wind Group are shooting for a turbine that's shaped more like a soup can and functions a lot like a jet engine. Learn what's in store for the future of windy Winnipeg.

Antarctic Fire and Ice

Antarctic Fire and Ice Thousands of men and women live inside the frozen Antarctic, many of them scientists studying the effects of global climactic change. At McMurdo Station, here's the unique way in which engineers use state-of-the-art hydronic systems to keep them comfortable with winter temps that can fall to -30 F and wind gusts to 70 MPH.

What's the Heat Frequency?

What's the Heat Frequency? When was the last time you conducted an RFR Hazard Assessment? Designed for industrial sites that operate induction units, heat sealers, RF dryers, MRI machines, and RF soldering or welding, Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) assessments are required by OSHA to protect personnel who work near the powerful heating units.

Transcritical Coolers Un-closeted

Transcritical Coolers Un-closeted When it comes to cooling dairy and meat products in the world's supermarkets, medium-temperature efficiency is transcritcial. A closet-sized CO2 refrigeration unit can run at a higher ambient temperature than more traditional coolers. The units operate with a lower design condensing temperature and offer greater efficiencies using scroll technology.

Roll Out the Beer Boiler

Roll Out the Beer Boiler Need a steam boiler for a hygienic tissue paper plant or a radiant heater system for a brewery? No matter the heat processing need, superior technical knowledge and custom fabrication are vital. One hot Polish boiler house construction firm cools its competition by guaranteeing custom hands-on fabrication.

Destroying Legionnaire's Disease

Destroying Legionnaire's Disease Can a medical facility in Malta reduce the spread of Legionnaire's disease to its more than 800 patients? Connecting a CMMS to every HVAC unit, the computerized maintenance system alerts on-site engineers to the warm water which naturally collects on condensate drip trays. Controlled water drainage is key since Legionella bacteria thrive there.

HVAC Easy

HVAC Easy When it comes to new commercial facilities, deciding on an HVAC system shouldn't be difficult. Go with the most efficient system, even if it means spending more upfront to guarantee sufficient savings over time. Why? Regardless of the future path of technology, it is almost certain that energy will not get cheaper.

LEED for Schools is in Session

LEED for Schools is in Session Not long ago, HVAC design for a typical K-12 school was considered unglamorous. But with LEED for Schools, engineers strive to develop more innovative sustainable ways to provide the world's classrooms with high-performance energy. From dual-fuel boilers to thermal storage, one school benefited from LEED inspired HVAC design.

Give Me Steam

Give Me Steam Who says burning coal is dirty and inefficient? Not the Danish engineers who conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment study for the Nordjyllandsvaerket-Unit 3 coal fired plant. Its turbines and boilers updated for environmental compliance, this coal/oil-fired plant produces ultra supercritical steam at an incredibly efficient rate.

Frozen Food for Thought

Frozen Food for Thought If there's one issue more important to HVAC engineers than energy, it's food; preserving it. Where can HVAC/R professionals find food wholesalers and supermarket executives gathered in one place? At the Food Marketing Institute's Future Connect Conference, the most comprehensive expo designed to address the many challenges facing the food industry today. Taking place on May 4-6 at the Dallas Hyatt Regency, Future Connect promises to connect engineers not only with invaluable industry expos, but hundreds of industry contacts as well.

Hydrogen Happy HVAC

Hydrogen Happy HVAC Could future commercial and industrial plants be powered by small hydrogen cells? If research students from Pennsylvania State University and Commonwealth University achieve their goals, hydrogen manufactured by electrolysis of water would produce enough gas to power an electrical current that can maintain room temperature. It would also do so cheaply and efficiently. While this solution to creating hydrogen doesn't solve the problems of storage and transportation, it offers the gas a boost in the ongoing debate over which energy alternatives to pursue.
