Pipeline Construction Project Isn't Boring

Pipeline Construction Project Isn't Boring How did construction managers for the new Sempra Energy facility manage to tap into an existing gas pipeline junction located across 36 miles of rugged southern Louisiana terra firma and two major waterways? In a daring, if not epic move, heavy construction crews commandeered an island which was accessible by barge only. The island became the unique staging area for tons of horizontal drilling equipment, excavators, cranes, and generators that had to be ferried up the Intra-coastal Waterway. Equipment inventories not only included a record 42 in. bore, it also put into action "one of the largest HDD rigs in the world."

Crawling at Light Speed

Crawling at Light Speed Think the bulldozer is a lumbering earth moving concept that can't possibly be improved upon? New engineering advances in bulldozer tech are revolutionizing the way heavy construction contractors are going about their site work. From fuel-efficient agile crawlers, to rubber-track units that can reach 18 MPH, to machines that decrease "lever effort by as much as 90%," these crawlers are making contractors feel the earth move.

Location, Location, Location

Location, Location, Location GPS devices don't pound caissons or set heavy steel, but they will provide you with a solid global location. A recent survey of commercial contractors showed that GPS devices are one of the most sought after construction tools — especially systems that offer "TPS, for complex surveying, layout, and even… estimating." But which GPS unit best suits your heavy construction needs? Locate your answer here.

Linoleum and Lay Ups

Linoleum and Lay Ups Creating the ultimate playing surface for the globe's basketball teams isn't as simple as installing any old wood floor. Commercial grade sports flooring has become a science in itself, as precise and tested as the gifted athletes who tread upon it. Newly engineered flooring designed for "reduced budgets" is available not only in traditional wood, but also linoleum and PVC. Quick assembly systems make them "easy to lay."

Tantalizing Tilt-ups

Tantalizing Tilt-ups Used to be architects could count on the tilt-up exterior wall panel coming in one color only: your basic concrete gray. But all that's changed now that decorative tilt-up panels have become a popular commercial structural wall system of choice. Once they've been installed in a "face-up" position, the concrete systems can be treated with integral colors, textured to reveal custom shapes, or even finished off with a thin "mock" brick.

Asadov's Architectural Aquatic Adventure

Asadov's Architectural Aquatic Adventure Until recent years, Russia was infamous for its monolithic urban architecture. Over the past two decades however, the bland concrete construction has given way to some of the most architecturally innovative high-rise designs to be found anywhere on the globe. Nothing typifies the new Russian architectural desire "to go where no man has gone before" like Alexander Asadov's Aerohotel. The space-station-like structure will "perch" on rigid spokes embedded into the sea or lake floor, while its roof will be outfitted with an airstrip.

About This Month's Topic The Green Hospital: Design Evolution or Common Sense?

The Green and Sustainable Healthcare facility is all the rage. But isn't it just plain common sense to construct hospitals that are both healthy for the patient and the environment? Are we in danger of shifting our focus from effective and efficient healing facilities to green architectural masterpieces?
