Laser Industry Poised for Growth
When it comes to lasers, the future looks good. According to a new report, the global laser market should surge from its 2012 figure to reach $19.88 billion by 2017, at a CAGR of 19.2% per year over the five years of the survey period. The report points to the green laser sector as a major area of activity but going forward, new applications in defense, manufacturing, medical, and automotive should spearhead growth should spearhead growth. Indeed, five major global automakers — Chrysler, Daimler, General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen — have revealed plans to expand in China, Europe, and North America. |

Let It Roll
A new series of motor oils and lubricants features nanospheres of tungsten in the mix, which because of their circular shape, impart a rolling mechanism as the oil coats the engine components, greatly cutting down on friction. The new lube line provides a nano-based protective film that can readily move over and into rough metal surfaces, reducing temperature as well as wear and tear.

Keeping the Engines Running
Fuel-injection systems for a variety of engines require pumps and valves that must function adequately for millions of injection cycles. Ensuring that level of performance requires measuring their operation in an environment that simulates the conditions inside an actual engine. This case study presents one company's approach for obtaining the necessary data and analyzing it effectively to predict the injection-system's long-term reliability.

1 kW Fiber Welding Laser
Automakers want increased processing speeds from laser welders and the JK1000FL fiber laser is proving to be up to the task. Its 50-200 μm spot size enables deeper penetration and the high-quality beam accommodates some defocusing due to slight variations between the material and nozzle tip. The icing on the cake is that it consumes up to 10x less energy than ND:YAG lasers at 1 kW.

Modeling/Simulation Software Cuts Gearbox Power Losses
The latest modeling software packages, such as MapleSim from Maplesoft, do not use a mathematical representation of a complete transmission, but instead link together transmission components made up of governing equations to simplify the overall model. As this video illustrates, a controller can then be designed to optimize transmission operation and performance, facilitating hardware-in-the-loop testing.

"Stop-Start" Saves Gas
This new generation of commercial 2013 pickup trucks features a unique, computerized "stop-start" system that automatically shuts the engine down when the truck is stopped at a traffic light or anywhere else an operator decides to stop for a short or extended period. The engine then starts up again when the operator releases the brake. This system is said to save up to 3.3% in fuel use per fill-up.
