Will USVs Redefine Naval Warfare?

Will USVs Redefine Naval Warfare? Like their airborne UAV counterparts, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) could give the U.S. Navy a significant advantage on the high seas in terms of stealthy strikes, remotely operated patrols, and long range missions. One USV that's up to the task may be the Piranha from Zyvex Marine. Sporting a lightweight structure of nano-enhanced carbon fiber, this 54 ft long USV consumes 12 gal fuel/hr and cruises at 24 knots (44 km/hr). According to the manufacturer, the 8,000 lb boat saves 75% of the fuel that a traditional boat consumes at 50 gal/hr. As a result, this fuel economy translates to a 2,500 mile or 10x longer range carrying a 15,000 lb payload (video).

Materials . . .
Liquid Body Armor

Liquid Body Armor Typical 25 lb body armor puts on more pounds with protective ceramic and metal plates. One solution from BAE Systems utilizes a shear-thickening liquid that reduces thickness and weight, while delivering more maneuverability. Upon a bullet's impact, the liquid's suspended particles lock together to dissipate the force. When combined with fewer Kevlar layers, the liquid-modified hybrid armor is 45% thinner (video).

Thin Film with Properties Galore

Thin Film with Properties Galore Using theoretical modeling, MIT researchers have discovered that thin films of bismuth-antimony exhibit some properties like graphene plus various others by changing conditions. In fact, electron flow could be hundreds of times faster than typical silicon chips, which may lead to significantly faster processors. Much more efficient power production would also be useful for thermoelectric powered satellites.

Communications & Surveillance . . .
Surveillance Bot Conquers Rugged Terrain

Surveillance Bot Conquers Rugged Terrain Precise control is the key to letting this 11 lb robot jump through windows and climb staircases. Via a piston actuator powered by a disposable fuel cartridge, the SandFlea can tackle 30 ft heights. Landing attitude is gyro-stabilized, while special wheels handle landing shock. Equipped with live video for remote control, this lightweight spy is launched by a laser-based guiding system (video).

Surveillance Targets the Arctic

Surveillance Targets the Arctic Able to operate down to -50 F and in deep snow, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is on the wish list of the U.S. military (video). Nicknamed KODIAK, the driver-optional military vehicle has to be based on a commercial platform for part availability and local repair, according to Northern Command. The ATV must be capable of carrying a sensor payload, described as fulfilling "threat assessment; persistent stare [and] mobile surveillance" duties.

DNA Verifies Electronics as Genuine

DNA Verifies Electronics as Genuine With millions of counterfeit electronic components finding their way into military systems, the U.S. Department of Defense is seeking methods to easily identify the fakes. One promising way is to use plant DNA to mark genuine electronics. This customer marker can be incorporated into ink, laminates, metal coatings, thread, varnish, and more. False positives are rated at one in a trillion.

Motor Makes Automated Explosives Detector
Possible

Motor Makes Automated Explosives Detector Possible Having decided to automate a handheld explosives detection device, its designers set out to find a motor small enough to fit the crowded housing. In addition, a high motor efficiency was necessary to permit sample analysis using available battery power. This case history describes the DC motor chosen for the job. In the end, the motor also made detection more consistent.

Design & Assembly . . .
3D Printing Begets Smart UAV Wing

3D Printing Begets Smart UAV Wing Rapid prototyping companies, Stratasys and Optomec, have co-produced what they say is the first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wing featuring surface-printed electronics. Using Optomec's proprietary aerosol jet system, the team incorporated sensor, antenna, and other circuitry directly onto the surface of the wing component, shaped by the Stratasys Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) system (see video).
