Is Gigabit Ethernet Up to the Job?

Is Gigabit Ethernet Up to the Job? On paper, gigabit Ethernet seems fast enough for process control and automation applications, but according to one expert, that assumption is wrong. Stack and infrastructure delays reduce the system's speed to unacceptable levels. Heat dissipation and wiring complexity hinder implementations. This article examines the benefits and challenges associated with gigabit Ethernet and 100 Mbit Ethernet "when used in the realm of machine control and industrial automation." It suggests that plant managers use EtherCAT as an interim technology until gigabit Ethernet gets up to speed.

Better Monitoring with Radar

Better Monitoring with Radar Radar has been a boon for operations that require advanced level monitoring. However, not all radar applications are the same. Radar equipment used must fit the environment to produce the desired results. This piece from Chemical Processing describes best practices for advanced level monitoring.

Ultrasonic Flow Meters Gain Acceptance

Ultrasonic Flow Meters Gain Acceptance Ultrasonic flow meters operate by inferring volumetric flow based on velocity through a flow area. While these meters offer better accuracy and lower maintenance than traditional systems, their accuracy can be affected by the relationship between velocity and viscosity. Learn how these meters operate and the key considerations when specifying your next ultrasonic flow meters.

Get More Value from Waste Heat

Get More Value from Waste Heat Most energy users and producers — from electric power generating plants and industrial facilities to automobiles — are terribly inefficient. The energy balance worsens when these inefficient systems don't capitalize on opportunities to capture and use their waste heat. Now, a technology under development at Oregon State University could improve the equation. The technology's success centers on a thermally-activated system, which combines a vapor compression cycle with an organic Rankine cycle.

New Cooling Tower Motors Revolutionary?

New Cooling Tower Motors Revolutionary? In this video interview, Baldor's Roman Wajda discusses how three different technologies were combined to create what one Baldor expert calls a "revolutionary change" in the design and function of cooling tower motors. Plant Engineering editor Peter Welander explores the technology and its impact on cooling towers in this video report.

Fixing Actuating Valves in a Dirty Coal Plant

Fixing Actuating Valves in a Dirty Coal Plant An Australia-based coal preparation plant uses an array of pneumatically actuated knife-gate valves to control coal flow. The plant's dirty and wet environment necessitated a trade-off between switching speeds and maintenance issues. Direct-mounted pilot valves were fast, but exposed to the environment. Encasing the valves protected them, but reduced switching speeds. Dividing the pilot valves into two components was the solution — pilot and slave modules worked.

Pressure Transmitter Improves Accuracy and Speed

Pressure Transmitter Improves Accuracy and Speed The Sitrans 500 pressure transmitter from Siemens is designed for the chemical, petrochemical, oil, and gas industries. The transmitter offers a reference accuracy of 0.03%, with a response time of just 88 ms. The transmitter is fully HART-enabled for remote monitoring, and also offers an interface right on the sensor. The transmitter's improvements are designed for complex process monitoring that requires the highest accuracy and speed.

Phosphorus Fertilizer from Sludge

Phosphorus Fertilizer from Sludge Phosphorus and other nutrients recovered from wastewater sludge are converted into a revenue-generating fertilizer product by a Canadian company. The process, highlighted in this video, uses a fluidized bed reactor to remove about 85% of influent P. The recovered nutrient stream is mixed with appropriate doses of magnesium chloride and caustic to precipitate struvite pellets.

(Almost) Chemical-free Water Cleanup

(Almost) Chemical-free Water Cleanup A low-cost multi-membrane water filtration system described in Chemistry World relies on the Fenton reaction with minimal chemical input. An enzyme converts added glucose in the upper membrane to hydrogen peroxide, which is catalyzed into toxin-neutralizing hydroxyl radicals by iron particles in the lower membrane. Good potential for trichloroethylene and trichlorophenol removal was demonstrated.

Electricity Use by Motors Set to Skyrocket

Electricity Use by Motors Set to Skyrocket By 2030, worldwide electricity consumption by motors could nearly double from today's levels if steps aren't taken to boost the efficiency of electric motor-driven systems (EMDS), warns the International Energy Agency in a new report. The report, entitled "Energy-Efficiency Policy Opportunities for Electric Motor-Driven Systems," also points out that carbon dioxide emissions resulting from this electricity consumption would exceed 8,500 million tons. On a positive note, a 20-30% increase in the efficiency of EMDS could reduce electricity demand by 10%, according to the report, which also includes a variety of recommendations aimed at cutting the energy requirements of EMDS.

Bubble Curtain Contains Spilled Oil

Bubble Curtain Contains Spilled Oil The oil spill containment system devised by Norwegian research organization SINTEF functions in stronger currents than conventional booms and is based on bubbles. Compressor-fed perforated rubber air-hoses, anchored by a grating submerged to a depth of a few meters, generate a curtain of bubbles. A horizontal current is formed as it reaches the surface, keeping the oil in place for easier recovery. Sensitive areas can also be closed off to prevent spill damage.
