Military Gasifies Trash to Ash

Military Gasifies Trash to Ash The small scale and portability of a waste gasification system being tested by the U.S. Marines can contribute to increased security and combat capability at forward operating bases. Originally designed for shipboard use, the Micro Auto Gasification System applies controlled pyrolysis to reduce up to 100 lbs of solid waste into 5 lbs of ash and syngas that is used to sustain the process. Commercial application in schools, offices, and hospitals is also envisaged. Lack of visible emissions, complete destruction of anything discarded with military value, low carbon footprint, and other tactical and environmental benefits of the process are highlighted in this video.

New Autonomous Level Logger for Very Low Ranges
Keller America, Inc.
Environmental Sensors CGES Series

CARLO GAVAZZI Automation Components

New Autonomous Level Logger for Very Low Ranges The new DCX-CAPA from Keller is specifically designed for high accuracy, long term monitoring of very low pressure ranges. Its DCX-CAPA is ideal for use in applications such as CSO monitoring, weir level, leak testing, or any other situation where full scale levels are below 120 in. of water column.

Environmental Sensors CGES Series When CO2 levels rise to an unacceptable level, with poor air quality and stuffy rooms, the CGES sensors can be used to help increase the supply of fresh air into the building and, as a result, improve the indoor air quality.

Recycling on the Railroad

Recycling on the Railroad Concrete and wood ties are being replaced by recycled plastic on a stretch of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system. The higher initial cost of Axion International's EcoTrax™ is offset by longer service life, ease of installation, and other benefits cited in this video. The composite is fabricated by Pennsylvania recycler and plastics provider Ultra-Poly Corp.

Polar Garbage Patrol

Polar Garbage Patrol Waste management is a cold, hard reality in Antarctica, where all of the 5.5 million lbs of solid and 1 million lbs of hazardous refuse generated at McMurdo Station is sent back to the U.S. in one annual shipment. A 63% recycling rate is maintained as each of the 1,200 residents sorts their own trash.

Europe's Eye on Earth Network

Europe's Eye on Earth Network Noise, air, and water pollution trends in Europe are depicted on a trio of online interactive maps recently launched by the European Environment Agency and Microsoft. The AirWatch system integrates data from more than 2,000 monitoring sites and the WaterWatch service tracks 22,000 locations. Users contribute to the NoiseWatch database by means of a mobile device "Noise Meter" application.

Phred Takes the Phosphorus Out

Phred Takes the Phosphorus Out Excess phosphorus in cattle feedlot wastewater, a major agent of algal blooms, poses a barrier to irrigation reuse by farmers. Up to 60% of the P is removed from wastewater and retained in pellet form by a fluidized bed precipitator (Phred) developed at Kansas State University. The pellets have value as a natural slow-release fertilizer.

Slurry Distributors

ERIEZ Flotation Group, formerly Canadian Process Technologies, Inc. (CPT)

Vapor Recovery Engineering Services -- AMCEC AMCEC's team of seasoned engineers is dedicated to provide quality engineering and services. Our goal is to design and supply high performance cost-efficient process systems that meet each client's individual requirements.

Slurry Distributors The EMFG rotating slurry powered distributor (RSP) accurately divides a stream of pulp into two or more equal and separate process streams, and is ideally suited for feeding multiple flotation columns or other process equipment. The 'no-motor', low maintenance design has made the RSP the distributor of choice for high flow, multi-stream distribution.

Bioremediation is in the Genes

Bioremediation is in the Genes The sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio vulgaris can metabolize metals and radioactive waste, but it also corrodes metals used in oil drilling. A genetic map charted by U.S. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab researchers will determine how the anaerobic bacteria interact with surrounding environments. The data are expected to direct desirable bioremediation outcomes.

Nuclear Waste Interaction at a Distance

Nuclear Waste Interaction at a Distance Determining how best to cleanup radioactive sludges at legacy nuclear facilities in the UK is the focus of University of Leeds and Sellafield Ltd. engineers. Composition and behavior of different waste sludges will be assessed with remote monitoring equipment. Findings will serve to define processes for safe retrieval, conditioning, storage, and ultimate disposal.

Superior Sensors with Graphene Foam

Superior Sensors with Graphene Foam Graphene nanosheets grown as foam-like structures surpass available gas sensors in detecting hazardous chemicals and air pollutants. The material developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY, preserves the gas adsorption sensitivity of nanostructures at the macroscale, making it more practical for environmental sensing applications. In 5-10 minute tests, ammonia was detected at 1,000 ppm and nitrogen dioxide at 100 ppm.

Long Distance Operators

Long Distance Operators Four self-propelled boats are currently traversing the Pacific Ocean, measuring water temperature, salinity, and other oceanographic data with solar-powered sensors. The Wave Gliders were launched last November from California; two are headed for Australia and two for Japan. Basic data collected during the 300-plus day journeys is accessible via Google Earth's Ocean Showcase.

Maxim Evaporators on Military Vessels
Maxim Evaporators, LLC
Catalytic Sensors
Control Instruments Corp.

Maxim Evaporators on Military Vessels Military vessels can avoid having to carry large supplies of water. They can preserve valuable space for cargo and supplies and save on fuel consumption. By utilizing a heat recovery evaporator, they do not need to carry large supplies of filters, membranes, and other replacement items in order to have potable water.

Catalytic Sensors Catalytic Sensors for Flammable Gas Catalytic sensors are typically used to monitor flammable gases in the 0-100% Lower Flammable Limit (LFL or LEL) range. Catalytic sensors are best suited for area monitoring applications.

How to Grow a Glacier

How to Grow a Glacier The glaciers that supplied water for alpaca farmers in the town of Licapa have disappeared, disrupting life in this region of the Peruvian Andes. An engineer equipped with World Bank funding and a mixture of water, sand, and lime seeks to reverse that trend. Whitewashing exposed black rocks reduces heat absorption; a 30 F temperature drop at painted portions and evidence of ice formation is documented in this video. It's a modest start, but "doing something about it is better than nothing at all."
