Phil Robinson, consultant for Parker Hannifin Corp., will explain how standards can help in designing, building, and maintaining leak-free systems. A Machine Design article notes that variable speed pump drives not only save energy but run quieter and produce less heat than fixed speed pumps, which provide flow without regard to actual power needs. Variable speed units pump at the most efficient speed for the hydraulic power required for a given task and should be considered if a machine cycle has fluctuating demands.

Shop owners may want to look into building (or have a local fabricator build) a do-it-yourself hydraulic pump power unit based on plans from Gizmoplans to save "hundreds of dollars." The unit specified produces a maximum pressure of 3,000 psi with 0.5 gpm flow. Plans include a list of parts suppliers for the system components.

Enerpac's SyncHoist system precisely moves and positions a single, massive hydraulic dock crane's load while softening starts and stops to reduce damage from oscillating wire cables. "Smart" hydraulics monitor and guide compact 700 bar (1,800 psi) double-acting, push-pull cylinders integrated into four lifting points above the load. The system allows for programmed positioning and aligning of loads.

Watch as developers try to run with HyQ, the Italian Institute of Technology's quadruped robot that uses torque-controlled hydraulic actuation. Robot motion is powered by a combination of hydraulic cylinders and electric motors driving the machine's 12 joints. HyQ has traveled up to 2 m/sec and demonstrated controllability to counter "upsetting" forces, and climb over "rough terrain" and obstacles.

Keeping fluid in and contaminants out are the dual functions of hydraulic system seals. But as with any component, there are tradeoffs. Contamination exclusion may come at the cost of higher seal friction; efficient labyrinth seals may be expensive and difficult to install. But the best place to start is with ensuring the sealing interface is kept clean.

Magura's hydraulic bike rim brakes do not require the additional weight of a fluid reservoir. Hub-mounted rotor hydraulic brakes put high heat into the fluid, requiring a reservoir to handle fluid expansion. With Magura's brakes acting on the larger circumference wheel rim, heat is conducted away from the pads, so the fluid temperature remains relatively constant.

The new Kobelco SK170 excavator has 10% better fuel economy and productivity than previous models, and provides faster engine response and more power. The machine has "upgraded" intelligent hydraulics with an engine and hydraulic warm-up system that rapidly brings working fluid to an optimum working temperature. A regeneration function feeds the cylinder demanding oil first with oil pushed out of another cylinder, saving energy.
