Bigger isn't always better, but it's encouraging to see renewable and alternative technologies grabbing a larger slice of the energy pie. Scientific American presents a slide show depicting how 10 representative renewable energy options are performing on a grand scale. California hosts the world's largest solar thermal scheme — the 354 MW Solar Energy Generating Systems project in the Mojave Desert — and the Geysers, said to be the most productive geothermal field worldwide. Also hailed are the 240 MW dry biomass-fueled plant in Finland, a commercial wave power plant floating off Portugal, and the biggest offshore wind farm yielding up to 194 MW peak power off Lincolnshire, England.

R&D REPORT
Zinc — the Next Silicon?
  Zinc — the Next Silicon?

The effort to find materials from which to construct new electronic devices has often concentrated on exotic alloys like gallium arsenide (GaAs) and compounds of indium (In). The latest attempt combines common zinc oxide with dopants like beryllium, cadmium, and selenium to form photonic layers that can emit a range of frequencies, improving the performance of LEDs and other diodes, UV detectors and transmitters, and other types of devices.

Finding Tuberculosis, Fast
  Finding Tuberculosis, Fast

Tuberculosis is a global health problem. According to the World Heath Organization, it killed 1.6 million people in 2005, and one-third of the world's population is currently infected with the TB bacillus. Left untreated, each person with active TB disease will infect 10 to 15 people each year. But reliable methods for detecting the disease cost a lot, and take too long. A prototype device can detect as few as 20 TB bacteria in half an hour, using microfluidics, magnetic-nanoparticle labels, and a detector that works on the same principles as magnetic resonance imaging.

  VIDEO: Motion on Display

It looks something like a spaceship that's landed on earth and started operation on its own. The "Smart Pod" is definitely the future of assembly technology. It's a fully enclosed medical device assembly system with big windows so you can look inside and see what it's doing. Designed in a modular fashion for easy reconfiguration, its Scottish makers have a lot of visible motion going on inside: a pick-and-place robot, machine vision cameras, ballscrew driven assembly tools, a synchronized material handling system with linear motors, and Ethernet communications. And the entire machine is controlled by a single personal computer.

TECH ARTICLE
Laser Welding of Plastics

"Plastic welding using a laser source has become an alternative to conventional plastics joining technologies, such as gluing, ultrasonic, vibration or element heating technology by offering flexible seam contouring, minimal heat input and consistent weld quality. The laser source can be either Nd:YAG or direct diode, depending on the type of welding application and materials. The weld joint created using the laser is a lap geometry, one that naturally reflects many plastic joint designs." Read this article in its entirety.
