Risk assessment involves determining the severity of an injury — usually straightforward — and assessing the probability of an injury occurring — not as straightforward. Safety buses run on black channels; this means the network is invisible to — or it does not affect — the safety information traveling on it. Using non-safety related networks saves money, but requires that a safety layer be added on top of the regular networking protocols. Selecting interlocks to be used with moveable guards is a small, but very important, part of the safety hierarchy. Before selecting an interlock, be sure to consult the product standards. Some modern interlocks use RF signals or RFID technologies; they are not easy to defeat and they work well in dusty, damp environments. Another option is to lock the moveable guard in place to protect either the operator or the process.
