Global-wide data reveals an inverse relationship between overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and accident rates. The higher the accident rate at a company, the lower the OEE. Higher accident rates also correlate with significantly higher unscheduled asset downtime. Companies performing in the top tier tend to integrate safety into their overall systems rather than treating it as a separate entity. It is clear that companies which place emphasis on safety fare better in many performance-related metrics than their less safety conscious counterparts. Safety pays.

Configurable Safety Made Easy
elobau sensor technology, Inc.
eloProgis designed for the monitoring of specific machine inputs such as photoelectric sensors, light curtains, magnetically operated sensors, emergency stop buttons, safety mats, etc. allowing the user to program the function of these inputs using icon-based software to create specific logic to control the safety outputs. elobau sensor technology.
Controlling the Collective
Control all of your safety devices — such as light curtains, guards, and e-stops — with Safety at Work, an easy-to-use, inexpensive, open technology formulated (and supported) by multiple vendors. Coupling controllers allows sophisticated safety options. When coupled, one controller can receive output from a different controller and make decisions based on that input. Watch how to setup a safety controller as a safety PLC in this associated video.

Critical Factory Communication Display Parker Hannifin/Electromechanical Automation
One of the best ways to cut the high cost of downtime and scrap, is to empower workers with real-time, situational awareness for faster response to downs and non-conforming conditions on the factory floor. That's why the new Parker Factory Display (PFD) visualization system pays for itself so quickly.
Green Means Go!
For three years, the traffic light in a fabricating shop's parking lot has been green, telling employees their workplace is safe. The single red light, indicating a reportable accident has occurred, resulted in the intended effect of causing workers to stop to learn what had happened. This case study explains how the fabricating shop received back-to-back Safety Awards of Honor. Maybe your employee parking lot needs a traffic light.
Safety Light Curtains by Schmersal Schmersal Inc.
The SLC/SLG440 series light curtains offer fully integrated functions such as programmable blanking, integrated contactor monitoring (EDM), start/restart interlock, beam coding, and double reset — configured solely with a button/enabling switch. They also feature better status signaling via a bright LED status cap and a seven segment LED display. Visit us here...
Wireless Position Sensor: Hazardous Area Honeywell Sensing and Control
The XYR6000 position sensor from Honeywell Sensing and Control helps improve overall reliability by giving users the ability to remotely monitor a number of applications ranging from valve position to safety shower emergency use. It's based on one of the company's most-proven sensor technologies.
Variety of Ear Protection Devices Kee Safety Inc.
Kee Safety® offers various styles of ear muffs and ear plugs to reduce noise exposure and risk of hearing loss. It is recommended that employees wear hearing protection if noise or sound exceeds 85 dB.
In a Process, Start at the Beginning!
To evaluate an existing process for safety, start by analyzing the process, unit by unit. Compare the estimated risk to your company's definition of tolerable risk and determine if additional risk reduction is required. Be sure to include cyber security in your process; compromised networks pose safety concerns. Follow the flowcharts in this comprehensive Plant Engineering article to improve the safety of any process.
How Risky are Your Risk Assessments?
Risk assessment involves determining the severity of an injury — usually straightforward — and assessing the probability of an injury occurring — not as straightforward. Using quantitative probabilities is risky; numbers lend credence (which may not be warranted) to the result. A semi-qualitative approach, detailed by Manufacturing AUTOMATION, might work better.
Gone are the days when safety systems consisted exclusively of time-consuming emergency stops. Today, safety systems are holistic, with diagnostic information appearing on an HMI to help operators diagnose issues quickly. By applying appropriate risk management and integrating safety into plant automation systems, shops can reduce the number of emergency stops as well as the downtime associated with each stop. The Black Channel Demystified
Safety buses run on black channels; this means the network is invisible to — or it does not affect — the safety information traveling on it. Using non-safety related networks saves money, but requires that a safety layer be added on top of the regular networking protocols. This report from Control Designremoves the black magic from black channels.
Don't Let Your Guard Down
Selecting interlocks to be used with moveable guards is a small, but very important, part of the safety hierarchy. Before selecting an interlock, be sure to consult the product standards. Some modern interlocks use RF signals or RFID technologies; they are not easy to defeat and they work well in dusty, damp environments. Another option is to lock the moveable guard in place to protect either the operator or the process.
