Construction jobsites are full of hazards. Providing personnel with the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), according to OSHA requirements, is a prime responsibility of the employer. A report from EHS Today offers advice in protecting employees from construction site hazards, beginning with tips regarding workplace evaluation. Generally recognized as the worker's last line of defense, PPE must not only address workplace hazards, it must fit seasonal and environmental conditions. Over-protection can prove just as hazardous as under-protection and should be avoided.

Prevent Heat Stress and Improve Productivity ITW Air Management
Keep workers cool and productive in extreme temperatures using Vortec Personal Air Conditioners. Cold air circulates through a diffuse vest, cooling the torso, neck, and face. The vest can go under other PPE, as needed, and the temperature can be adjusted by the wearer, even with gloved hands. PACs are ideal for confined spaces, boiler operations, welding, blasting, painting, hazardous waste removal, and work in unconditioned areas. PACs use a small amount of compressed air.
Thermo-Man® Tests Protective Apparel
Six feet tall and equipped with 122 heat sensors, Thermo-Man® makes sure protective apparel performs as it claims. Continually updated since the 1970's, the instrumented mannequin willingly faces the fire to test products made with materials such as DuPont™ Nomex® Fiber and DuPont™ Protera® fabric.
Variety of Ear Protection Devices Kee Safety Inc.
Kee Safety® offers various styles of ear muffs and ear plugs to reduce noise exposure and risk of hearing loss. It is recommended that employees wear hearing protection if noise or sound exceeds 85 dB.

R. S. Hughes Company, Inc.
The proprietary 3M™ Cool Flow™ valve is designed to release your hot, humid exhaled breath quickly, helping to prevent an unpleasant buildup of heat inside a respirator — a significant cause of discomfort to respirator wearers. From R.S. Hughes Company, Inc.
Improving Respiratory Protection
Safety + Health queries industry insiders about trends in respiratory protection. Increased reliance on control electronics, advanced battery technology, and new alarm systems are cited. So are efforts to manufacture systems with superior fits and seals. A new product page illustrating these trends supports the main story.
RUD's Fall Protection Anchorage Points RUD Chain, Inc.
The RUD- PSA Fall Protection Anchorage Points can be used as an anchor point for personal protective equipment (acc. to DIN EN 795). PSA's are marked according to DIN EN 365, e.g. (1 or 2 persons). Safety factor 4:1; also meets requirements of the DIN 50308 and OSHA 1926.502.
Safety Contact Bumpers
ASO Safety Solutions Inc.
Safety bumpers are used on transport vehicles, high-reach forklifts, and in applications where overtravel and cushioning is critical. The short response time of the actuated bumper initiates an immediate controller stop signal. From ASO Safety Solutions Inc.
Rubbermaid® Mobile Work Center U.S. Plastic Corporation
The versatile cart comes with a locking bar to provide security and hold drawers securely in place. The built-in cord wrap allows neat and convenient storage of power tools and work lights, and the 4 in. polyethylene casters, (2 swivel and 2 fixed), provide portability and are lockable for safety. From U.S. Plastic Corporation.
Can Copper Kill Microbes?
A team from UCLA is conducting a clinical trial to see if copper surfaces can reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections. For the four-year trial, two intensive care units at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center will feature three different surfaces: copper, sham stainless steel, and a conventional plastic or coated surface. The surfaces will be periodically sampled for bacteria and correlated with patient infection rates.
Less Hand Wringing over Hand Protection
Do you know that hand injuries account for almost one quarter of all workplace injuries? That statistic alone is enough to make one grab a pair of durable gloves. Bear in mind, dexterity is just as important as durability. Non-woven gloves, for example, provide the same thermal protection as woven gloves, but at a much lighter weight. Learn how laminated composites, stitch bonding, and other techniques help users choose a glove for the job at hand.
Wanted: Safety Engineers
According to stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, one of the fastest-growing high-pay jobs available today is safety and health engineer — not only in the U.S. but globally. Why? By employing occupational safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) professionals in their companies, businesses are realizing a significant increase in their bottom line.
A New Hazard Communication Standard
Are you prepared for Hazcom 2012? That's the question Lab Manager Magazine poses in this overview of the revised standard. The report focuses on the United Nations Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for hazardous chemicals, a system for harmonizing information on dangerous chemicals internationally. It also examines how GHS can protect workers while also helping businesses compete worldwide.
Shining Light on Bacteria
Chinese and Australian scientists have teamed up to develop a handheld, plasma-producing device that can instantly remove bacteria from skin. The battery-powered instrument, which can be built for less than $100, produces a plume of plasma between 20 and 23 C, very close to room temperature and harmless to skin. Research results show that the plasma not only inactivated the top layer of cells, but penetrated deep into bottom layers to kill the bacteria.
