Rare Earth Elements May Get Even More Rare

Rare Earth Elements May Get Even More Rare The list of electronic and electrical components and subassemblies that incorporate rare earth elements is extensive: high-strength permanent magnets, flat panel displays for smartphones and laptops, ceramic capacitors, computer memories, fiber optics, energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs, and more. With China sitting on 37% of the world's reserves and very few aggressive efforts to exploit reserves in other countries, the problem of adequate supply could easily become a geopolitical one. But there is hope, as the industry analysts quoted in this piece at Electronics 360 offer their views on the situation and advice for manufacturers that rely on rare earth materials.

SiC MOSFET Can Take the Heat

SiC MOSFET Can Take the Heat STMicroelectronics has revealed a new high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) power MOSFET for applications such as solar inverters and electric vehicles, enterprise computing, and industrial motor drives. Offering very low on-state resistance, along with low turn-off energy and gate charge, the SiC MOSFET is rated to handle temperatures to 200 C.

SMT Jumpers an Alternative to Through-hole
Types

SMT Jumpers an Alternative to Through-hole Types New SMT jumpers from Keystone Electronics Corp. are designed to link circuit board traces/tracks. The devices are designed to serve as alternatives for circuits where through-hole jumpers are not practical. In addition, the new connectors are designed to provide low-profile circuit linkage with minimal footprint for high-density, high-current PCB packages on power backplanes.

Internet of Things Could Start a Supply Chain
Revolution

Internet of Things Could Start a Supply Chain Revolution One of the ways in which some visionaries see the Internet of Things making a big splash is in supply chains. The reasoning is that the explosion in the number of intelligent devices will create a network rich with information that will enable supply chains to assemble and communicate in new ways. From the end user all the way back to the manufacturer, and maybe even to the manufacturer's suppliers, data can enhance demand and supply management.

Map Your Supply Web, Manage Risk

Map Your Supply Web, Manage Risk With changes in many supply chains motivated by regulatory changes and cost-reduction efforts, an accurate assessment of discrete risks is often overlooked or not given sufficient attention. The result is many companies being blind-sided by costly disruptions. The cerebral types at SupplyChainBrain strongly suggest mapping your supply network in accurate detail and then superimposing risk management on the map.

Rack Mount Network Simulator

Megladon Manufacturing Group, Ltd.

Miniature High Voltage Surface Mount Multipliers VMI offers standard hybrid multiplier configurations with DC output voltages ranging from 2 kV to 7 kV or higher when connected in series. VMI's full product line includes high voltage diodes, high voltage power supplies, high voltage opto-couplers, hybrid multipliers, and rectifier assemblies.

Rack Mount Network Simulator Megladon's 6RU and 3RU rack mount HLC Network Simulators allow testing over fiber optic glass up to 200 km and are modular, producing a variety of configuration options. They are used to test transport equipment for telecommunication carriers and identify incompatibilities of hardware solutions before they are deployed. Learn more...

Obsolescence/Counterfeiting . . .
Cooperation on Counterfeits Could Span the
Pacific

Cooperation on Counterfeits Could Span the Pacific In a ground-breaking government-industry cooperative effort, the Semiconductor Industry Association's Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force (ACTF) met with officials and agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Los Angeles. The agents will be trained on how to recognize potentially counterfeit shipments of semiconductors. An effort to enlist the aid of China Customs is also underway.

Too Good to Be the Real Thing

Too Good to Be the Real Thing Just like the old saw, "If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is," promises of immediate availability and a ridiculously low price for a hard-to-find or obsolete component will likely be offered by counterfeiters. Recognizing this pitch for what it is can help keep counterfeits out of your stockroom and off of your PC boards.

Manufacturing & Testing Services . . .
Expanding to Meet LED Assembly Demand

Expanding to Meet LED Assembly Demand A leading UK-based EMS provider saw a significant uptick in demand for LED assembly and the concomitant requirement to handle larger printed circuit boards. Its response was to install new equipment with 144 feeder lanes based on 8 mm wide feeders, capable of 23,000 components-per-hour (cph) on boards up to 1480 mm x 510 mm.

What to Do with E-waste

What to Do with E-waste According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than two million tons of e-waste are produced in the U.S. alone every year. An executive of a major U.S.-based EMS provider points out that electronic manufacturing operations, and EMS providers specifically, can make a significant impact on mitigating the problems caused by e-waste.

Low-power Wireless IC for Smart Metering
Silicon Labs

PV String Monitoring Cards In order to guarantee long-term power performance in mid- and large-scale photovoltaic (PV) installations, it is mandatory to properly monitor the production of the installation over time, at the string level. String level monitoring is guaranteed to maximize energy production, optimize facility management, and decrease operations and maintenance costs. Learn more...

Low-power Wireless IC for Smart Metering Silicon Labs' Si4438 EZRadioPRO® transceiver provides cost-effective, high-performance low-power sub-GHz wireless connectivity for smart metering applications. Designed for the 425-525 MHz ISM band, the Si4438 is also an ideal solution for in-home energy management systems and other smart grid infrastructure applications such as long-range back-haul communications to utilities.

Industry Standards
Using RFID in the Supply Chain

Using RFID in the Supply ChainThis International Standard defines the basic features of RFID for use in the supply chain when applied to transport units. It provides: specifications for the identification of product packaging; recommendations about additional information on the RF tag; semantics and data syntax to be used; data protocol to be used to interface with business applications and the RFID system; minimum performance requirements; the air interface standards between the RF interrogator and RF tag; and it specifies the reuse and recyclability of the RF tag.
