Building the Connected Car

Building the Connected Car Consumers increasingly want apps in their cars. They want automotive systems to connect to their smartphones and the cloud (see video). Unfortunately, a dominant app ecosystem has not materialized for the "wheeled platform," so carmakers must decide whether to build their own or partner with a technology company. Ultimately, the smartcar will sport apps for maps, speech recognition, geolocation, infotainment, and vehicle analytics, extending the availability of smart technology and connectivity to the road.

Sensors

Meggitt Sensing Systems — Wilcoxon Research

New RF Chipsets TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc., a leading RF solutions supplier and technology innovator, introduced 12 new products and highlighted two complete RF chipset families for 15 and 23 GHz point-to-point (PtP) radios serving 3G/4G cellular backhaul and related applications.

New Small, Low-cost, High-temperature Sensors The HT Series incorporates high-temperature components with long-lasting reliability of 786 general purpose sensors. The most popular sensors in the industry with the longest product lifetimes, the Wilcoxon 786 Series offers proven reliability for measurements you can trust. The high-temperature capability offers continuous monitoring of critical assets in extreme environments. Learn more...

Smartphone's "New World View"

Smartphone's 'New World View' Project Tango smartphones leverage advanced processing chips, cameras, and vision sensors to provide a unique perspective on the world, enabling spatial awareness and depth perception. With these new "senses," the phone can perform depth- and object-tracking, as well as real-time 3D mapping. The Verge examines this groundbreaking device, explaining what it can do and how it will change applications of the future.

Study Backs Self-driving Vehicles

Study Backs Self-driving Vehicles A recent study from the RAND Corporation details the benefits of autonomous driving systems, and says they outweigh disadvantages. Self-driving vehicles, the study suggests, can perform better than cars driven by the average human. Fewer accidents, improved energy efficiency, less congestion, and greater mobility for the elderly and disabled are among the benefits cited.

Energy-harvesting Switch Controls Home
Lighting

Energy-harvesting Switch Controls Home Lighting The switch at the heart of this home lighting control system needs neither batteries nor wires, simplifying system installation and eliminating battery replacements or recharging. As the video accompanying the article demonstrates, the switch harvests mechanical energy from the button-push. Thanks to embedded near-field communications (NFC) technology, the switches are easily added to wireless home networks and to the broader 'Internet of Things' with no security risk.

Wearable Technology Takes to the Gym

Wearable Technology Takes to the Gym Need to monitor muscle activity to better manage your workout? Why glue sensors to your body in adhesive-bandage fashion when you can simply don these sensor-equipped workout togs? Using electromyography (EMG), the form-fitting shirt and pants monitor 22 muscle groups. A compact wearable computing module acquires the data and wirelessly transmits it to an app on your smartphone.

Very Low Profile Memory Module: High
Reliability and Performance

Wintec Industries, Inc.
TCI6636 Wireless Infrastructure SoC
Texas Instruments Digital Signal Processors & ARM
Microprocessors

Very Low Profile Memory Module: High Reliability and Performance Wintec Industries offers DDR3 VLP registered MiniDIMM, the most advanced DRAM technology, improving power consumption and increasing bandwidth. The VLP small form factor is used in many networking devices — routers, hubs, and switches. DDR3 registered MiniDIMM is available in standard height (1.181 in.) and VLP (0.74 in.) options

TCI6636 Wireless Infrastructure SoC The TCI6636 from Texas Instruments is the industry's most comprehensive wireless infrastructure SoC, featuring an ideal mix of processing elements for both ultra-high capacity small cell and macro base stations. The TCI6636 delivers breakthrough performance, simultaneous 3G and 4G coverage, and capacity expansion features that wireless operators and users will love.

Prosthetic Hand "Feels"

Prosthetic Hand 'Feels' Tactile perception is restored for amputees with an advanced prosthetic system engineered by Swiss and Italian researchers. Electrodes implanted in a patient's upper arm were connected to the median and ulnar nerves. The nerve bundles were then stimulated in response to pressure sensors in the prosthetic, allowing the user to feel shapes and textures.

Foldable Electronics Closer to Reality

Foldable Electronics Closer to Reality Researchers have developed a stretchable and transparent electrical conductor that may lead to fully foldable TVs and cell phones. Their work uses grain-boundary lithography to place a gold nanomesh on elastomer. Gold nanomesh is not affected by oxidation, which causes a sharp drop in electrical conductivity in silver and copper nanowires.

Google Gets into Glucose Management

Google Gets into Glucose Management Google enters the smart contact lens race by developing devices with embedded electronics to track glucose levels in the user's tears. This non-invasive monitoring solution for diabetics transmits data wirelessly to a nearby receiver. LEDs that illuminate when glucose levels are unsafe are planned as an early-warning feature, according to Medgadget.

Look-and-Link Connectivity

Look-and-Link Connectivity It's not nice to point. But there is always an exception. South Korean researchers demonstrated a new wireless technology that enables device-to-device (D2D) communications. Using varying beam shapes, the new technique requires a user to simply point one wireless device toward another to establish a communication link. The researchers claim that antennas are getting smaller and stronger to make D2D more viable.
