Doubling the Space to Build Supercomputers Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, population 13,600+, is a fine town, but most people do not associate the locale with leading-edge electronics manufacturing technology. However, supercomputer maker Cray Inc. makes that exact association, and in fact launched its business there. To underscore its view, the company has doubled its manufacturing capacity in the town. Cray bought a building in October of last year which, when added to its existing manufacturing facility a few miles away, will bring its Wisconsin manufacturing space to 213,000 sq ft. The move has also caused speculation about the future of a small manufacturing facility Cray acquired in Milpitas, California.

Needle Valve for Pinpoint Dispensing
Plasma Etch System Uses Only Air

Needle Valve for Pinpoint Dispensing Electronics assembly requires the precise deposition of low- to medium-viscosity fluids, and this new normally-closed needle valve is designed to do exactly that. The valve can be paired with valve controllers and fluid reservoirs from the manufacturer for precision deposition of dots or lines of fluid.

Plasma Etch System Uses Only Air Older-generation plasma etching systems for printed circuit board de-smear and etch-back processing use CF4 (carbon tetrafluoride), which produces toxic byproducts.

A new etching system operates using only three-phase power and compressed air, eliminating the need to store and manage nasty chemicals. The manufacturer also claims faster etch times and better process uniformity for the compact system.

Silver Adhesive Simplifies Compact Assemblies

Nanocoating Cuts Stencil Wipe Frequency Consider a PCB with nearly 15,000 paste deposits packed into a 3 in x 7 in area, with 8,500 of those for 0.5 mm microBGAs. This is the test vehicle that Shea Engineering and Vicor used to determine, in a series of carefully designed experiments, if SAMP nanocoating could increase the number of print cycles between stencil wipes. The results surprised even the optimistic investigators.

Silver Adhesive Simplifies Compact Assemblies Assembling portable devices that incorporate flat screen displays — smartphones, tablets, etc. — can be made easier with an adhesive that is highly conductive and also adheres really well to indium tin oxide and color filter substrates. Just such an adhesive has been introduced by Electrolube. Silver-based SCPH is also resistant to the most common conformal coating material used in the process.

Inspection Platform Combines SPI and AOI A new solder paste inspection (SPI) platform from ASC International combines standard SPI with automated optical inspection (AOI) to detect absence/presence, polarity, misalignment, and other parameters and attributes. The LineMaster DM also includes a rework station.

Resolving Complex Surface Structures A new metrology system features two complimentary techniques for non-destructive 3D surface profiling. The system combines confocal and interferometric optical profilers to provide the best of both technologies: high definition confocal microscopy offers high lateral resolution while interferometry offers sub-nanometer vertical resolution. The combination provides accurate surface analysis of substrates and components.

What to Do with E-waste

Expanding to Meet LED Assembly Demand A leading UK-based EMS provider saw a significant uptick in demand for LED assembly and the concomitant requirement to handle larger printed circuit boards. Its response was to install new equipment with 144 feeder lanes based on 8 mm wide feeders, capable of 23,000 components-per-hour (cph) on boards up to 1480 mm x 510 mm.

What to Do with E-waste According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than two million tons of e-waste are produced in the U.S. alone every year. An executive of a major U.S.-based EMS provider points out that electronic manufacturing operations, and EMS providers specifically, can make a significant impact on mitigating the problems caused by e-waste.
