Plastics as Fuel

Plastics as Fuel Where there's a need, there's an opportunity. For example, the need for alternative energy has snowballed into a number of potential markets, including new markets for plastics. In a western Pennsylvania greenhouse, plastic is surfacing as a viable alternative fuel, despite public skepticism. It seems that plastic burns cleaner than natural gas when burned at extremely high heat, where the plastic ignites and breaks down into simple water, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules.
Some Korean companies already burn plastic, as this report details.

Jason Jr. Engineering Team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Receives 2006 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

2006 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award On Friday, July 14, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to the Jason Jr. engineering team (1986) in honor of the 20th anniversary of their first video survey of R.M.S. Titanic.

This small engineering team from the Deep Submergence Laboratory of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution — whose behind-the-scenes technical accomplishments resulted in the design and prototyping of a tethered robotic "video vehicle" 12,000+ feet deep in the North Atlantic — helped open doors to undersea discovery, commerce, innovation, and a new understanding of the ocean's ecosystem through remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Jason Jr. Principal Engineer Christopher J. von Alt accepted the award on the team's behalf at a ceremony held at the New England Aquarium in Boston. James Luyten, executive vice president and director of research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, was on hand to recognize the team for its remarkable accomplishment. Read the full story.

Acoustical Foam Composites

Acoustical Foam Composites Unlike other composites available, these multilayer systems from Inplant Enviro-Systems 2000, Inc. are manufactured without costly adhesives, thus eliminating the potential for failure between layers. Designed by acoustical engineers, Acousti-Composite has been optimized to economically provide high transmission loss, high noise reduction coefficients, and damping.

Tractor Designs Reap Plastics Awards

Tractor Designs Reap Plastics Awards John Deere has never been a company to hold back in the realm of design. Recently, the Alliance of Plastics Processors (APP) recognized the company's use of innovative materials and processing methods including in-line transfer compression molding, the ability to accommodate out-of-draw features, and new body panels compliant with federal emission requirements. Design News details the APP design competition and John Deere's award-winning products.

Second-Time-Around Plastics

Second-Time-Around Plastics Compress, melt, extrude. The beauty of the plastics recycling process is that it can continue indefinitely. The Erema Model 906T reuses polyethylenes and polypropylene rolls by compacting the materials first, then melting them at a controlled temperature to avoid thermal cycling. The recycling system operates at about 450 lbs/hour, depending on whether the material is low-density, linear-low-density, or high-density polyethylene.

Plastics Consume More Treated Minerals

Nearly three billion pounds of chemically-modified fillers and reinforcements were used in the plastics industry in 2005. That number is projected to increase to four billion pounds by 2010. While plastic building products, the appliance industry, and the plastics packaging industry all use treated minerals and reinforcements, it is talc and wollastonite that are expected to see the most growth. Both materials, not surprisingly, are used in the automotive plastics industry. More filler and reinforcement predictions.

8X Stronger than Steel

Never satisfied with status quo, researchers have found a potential means of making bullet-proof vests and nautical rope stronger and more durable.

One Hong Kong University researcher notes that the combination of ductility and stiffness generally do not partner in materials. But, he says, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene combined with carbon nanotubes offers both qualities.

One Step Is Better than Two

One Step Is Better than Two Structural foam parts stand a better chance of avoiding gas pockets along weld lines and improving cell structure by eliminating the two-stage injection of typical structural-foam systems. A new structural-foam machine developed by University of Toronto researchers enables the extruder to operate continuously, which makes for a more uniform gas/polymer mix.

Turbulent Flow Controls the Mold

Temperature is crucial to molding for the sake of productivity and cost savings. To make a mold the best heat exchanger, users need to keep a close watch on both the hot runner temperature controllers and the external mold temperature controller units.

For a short cycle and fast heat transfer, molders need turbulent flow, as this report from Modern Plastics explains.

Material Witness

Material Witness Understanding materials composition can help molders understand part failure. With infrared spectroscopy, a user can not only identify the types of materials used in a part, he or she may also check for contamination of a material or mold surface. This IMM tutorial explains how Fourier Transform Infrared, as infrared spectroscopy is known, helps molders determine what type of material is used in a part and if that material has any surface issues or contaminants.

Needles in the Haystack

Needles in the Haystack A choice of 40,000 grades of resin can be a daunting task, especially under a tight deadline.

This report helps resin shoppers:
 1. narrow down the choices, and
 2. know how to shop by price or by application.

It also helps determine what materials may be substituted for the "ideal material," which often proves too expensive or too difficult to find in the end anyway.

A Dearth of Diversity in Engineering

Despite efforts from the science and engineering community, women and minorities still lag in representation in the engineering field. Specifically, physics, math, and engineering have low representation from minority groups; women are under-represented in physics and engineering as well as engineering technology and computer science.

The reports are designed to prompt higher education to take action in promoting more diversity in science and engineering.

In-House Engineering

In-House Engineering Multi-tasking is the name of the game for this product development engineer position with American Standard Companies. The hired candidate will work in the company's Kitchen and Bath Division in New Jersey, leading the design and development of new products, conducting analysis with finite element analysis software, and creating prototype models.

Diversions . . .

Plastics and Prostate Cancer

Making it through a day without some kind of contact with plastics is hard to imagine. Now, scientists theorize that plastics may be partly to blame for prostate cancer. A lab test on rats showed that the chemical BPA leaks from the plastics of baby bottles and microwave containers, and has been linked to pre-cancerous prostate glands.

Peer-to-Peer Plastics Talk

Once you're out of school, you're on your own. That's when feedback from peers becomes important. Engineers have a number of ways to help each other out — and online forums count as one of them. Plastictalk.com has a forum intended specifically for plastics-related questions. Some questions go unanswered, but if intriguing enough, some questions will garner upwards of 20 responses on thoughts of injection molding guidebooks to producing hollow balls with blow molding technology.
