Thanks to the work of NIST and German scientists, a new mini-sensor holds potential to measure brain activity and advance the knowledge of neurological disease. The chip-scale sensor, about the size of a sugar cube and operating at room temperature, could be integrated into lightweight and flexible magnetoencephalography (MEG) helmets. It also would be less expensive to mass produce than typical atomic magnetometers, which are larger and more difficult to fabricate.

It's difficult for fruit growers to judge when to pick melons and other fruits whose outer skins don't change during ripening. Gas chromatography can provide the answer, but it can take up to an hour to analyze a single sample. Chinese and Australian scientists have teamed up to develop a handheld, plasma-producing device that can instantly remove bacteria from skin. The battery-powered instrument, which can be built for less than $100, produces a plume of plasma between 20 and 23 C, very close to room temperature and harmless to skin. Research results show that the plasma not only inactivated the top layer of cells, but penetrated deep into bottom layers to kill the bacteria.

A new prototype bioreactor promises to accelerate progress in biomedicine by allowing researchers to stimulate tissue growth — and perform analysis — at the same time. By using ultrasound to monitor tissue during processing without destroying it, the device could be a faster and less expensive alternative to traditional methods.
