Nanotechnology Manifesto Focuses on Future

Nanotechnology Manifesto Focuses on FutureWe've heard plenty about the risks of nanotechnology and the need for regulation. Now, a group of scientists have teamed to produce a report arguing the other side of the story — the need to take measured action so that fear and overreaction don't choke off this burgeoning market, which represented more than $32 billion in products last year alone. Read the group's manifesto, which calls for understanding and preventing risk by developing methods to quantify exposure and toxicity, and providing alternatives to in vivo testing; developing validated models for human and environmental effects that will permit safety by design; and supporting risk-focused research. Look here to find out more about the scientists and read additional commentary.

Nanoadhesives Get Buggy

Nanoadhesives Get BuggyTaking their cue from beetle feet, researchers at the Max Planck Institute have developed a new adhesive based on mushroom-shaped microhairs. Molded from a polymer mixture, the material can stick objects to smooth walls — just 5 sq cm is all that is needed to support a 100 g object. Potential applications include reusable tape and climbing shoes for robot feet.

Grow Carbon Nanotubes Anywhere

Grow Carbon Nanotubes AnywhereA pair of new methods from Rensselaer Polytechnic University can grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a variety of surfaces, including metal wires. The first, floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition, involves vaporizing a carbon-rich compound to deposit CNT arrays directly on metal surfaces. The second lower-temperature method involves growing nanotubes on silicon, then transferring them to a solder-coated surface. In related work, researchers at University of California, Berkeley have developed a high-temperature process to controllably reduce CNT diameters.

Nanotech Gets All Wet

Nanotech Gets All WetMagnetic interactions between nanoparticles of iron oxide can remove arsenic from drinking water, say Rice University scientists. The nanoparticles are self-attracting, and because iron binds to arsenic, they can actually pull the arsenic out of solution. Although the particles are currently expensive, the precursors themselves are not; team members are working to develop simple, economical manufacturing methods that would make the technique feasible for countries in the developing world. Meanwhile, UCLA researchers have developed a reverse osmosis membrane of engineered nanoparticles that promises to lower the cost of treating seawater and wastewater.

Micropump to Power Lab-on-Chip

Micropump to Power Lab-on-ChipUniversity of Utah engineers have built micropumps by forming microchannels in the top and bottom layers of a structure of permeable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sandwiched between two non-permeable PDMS layers. The permeable material transmits vacuum or pressure to force or suction fluids in the channels. With the addition of an outside vacuum source, the micropumps could power lab-on-a-chip technology.

'Poring' Over Nanometrology

Analyzing the size, distribution, and volume of nano- and micropores can be challenging but a new guide from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Germany's Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing tells how. The 79-page guide identifies processes; the two organizations are currently working on producing certified reference materials.

Steady as She Goes

Steady as She GoesVibration isolation is critical to high-resolution imaging, and this is especially true in the use of metrology equipment for nanotechnology. A discussion of vibration isolation for nano applications points out sources of vibration in your building — or nearby. Nanotech Detects HIV

A test based on surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can detect a range of viruses, including influenza and HIV in 60 seconds or less. University of Georgia researchers use silver nanorods and a preferential viewing angle to get optimal signal strength. The group says the technique can detect even a single virus particle. Meanwhile, University of California, San Francisco researchers and collaborators have developed a nanodelivery vehicle for anticancer agents that has cured mice of colon cancer with a single dose.

Building a Bio/Electrical Interface

Building a Bio/Electrical InterfaceLast month, it was a DNA-based electronic switch from the University of Portsmouth. This month, University of Michigan researchers have connected nerve cells to an integrated circuit using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). They grew a film of SWNTs; on that film they grew a layer of neuron precursor cells that differentiated into branched neurons. A voltage applied to the nanotube layer passes over at a reduced level to the cells.

Self Promotion

The people who get promoted are the ones who are proactive, and what better way to appear proactive than by, well, asking for a promotion. Of course, how you do it is just as important as what you do. First, decide if you really want that promotion, then lay the groundwork and let your boss know of your interest. Learn more...

Legos on the Loose

Legos on the LooseLegos aren't just for playtime any more. Now it's the Battle of the Lego-bots as middle schoolers test their engineering skills with Lego robots or design the nanomachines of the future. Example? Nanoprobes capable of patrolling the bloodstream for cholesterol.

True Black

True BlackBy chance, a University of Rochester research team led by Professor Chunlei Guo has created a means of rendering metal "pitch black." An incredibly intense laser burst alters a metal's surface so that it can absorb virtually all the light that falls upon it. The number and variety of potential applications, says Guo, are surprising.
