Nanotechnology and Regulation

Nanotechnology and Regulation
We're all aware, by now, of the tremendous potential that nanotechnology holds. Releasing that potential will require more than just innovative technology, says a new report by former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assistant administrator J. Clarence (Terry) Davies. In "Managing the Effects of Nanotechnology," Davies adds to a growing public dialog on developing an appropriate regulatory framework. Read up and be informed.

PicoCube Piezo Scanner: AFM, STM, Nanomanipulation

PicoCube Piezo ScannerPicoCube™ XY and XYZ piezo stages are ultra-high-performance, closed-loop piezoelectric scanning systems. Designed for AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy), SPM (Scanning Probe Microscopy) and nanomanipulation applications, they combine an extremely low-inertia (10 kHz resonant frequency!), high-speed piezo scanner with non-contact, direct-measuring, parallel-metrology capacitive feedback capable of 50 picometers resolution.

Big Power from Nanopackages

Big Power from Nano PackagesLithium ion battery cells based on nano-structured lithium titanate electrode materials have demonstrated a state-of-charge range double that of the conventional nickel metal hydride batteries currently used for hybrid electric vehicles. So says manufacturer Altairnano, which conducted the tests. The technology could eventually yield lithium-ion battery packs half the size of those now under test for HEVs. Read more...

Buckyballs: Toxic or Not?

Buckyballs: Toxic or Not?They're photogenic and invested with an astounding array of properties...and a dubious reputation. Buckyballs, or buckminsterfullerenes (C60) have received a bad rap from studies labeling them toxic to certain algae, bacteria, and aquatic life. Now, a new study from the University of Paris (France) suggests that the problem may not lie with the buckyballs at all, but rather with the polar organic solvents used in the studies.

Protein Components Form Nanosprings

Protein Components Form NanospringsProtein components called "ankyrin repeats" act like linear springs, rapidly refolding themselves after stretching, retaining their shape, strength, and generating force, say Duke University researchers. The proteins could act as nanosprings for the nanomachines of the future, or as biotransducers that change mechanical forces into biochemical signals.

New Molecule Walks

New Molecule WalksA new molecule, 9,10-dithioanthracene (DTA) can actually move in a straight line on a flat surface, say the University of California (Riverside, CA) researchers who developed it. The DTA mimics human walking, with a "linker" on each side to act as a foot. Heat lifts each foot in turn, causing the molecule to "walk" forward. The work may have applications in molecular memory.

Micro Nanotechnologies for Aerospace Applications

American Society of Mechanical EngineersThe CANEUS conference is the foremost international forum devoted to successfully transitioning emerging micro- and nanotechnology (MNT) concepts to aerospace system applications. The 2006 meeting will be held from August 27 — September 1, 2006, in Toulouse, France. The ASME Nanotechnology Institute is a sponsor of the event and ASME will publish the conference proceedings.

Fischer Technology, Inc.
Hardness Measurement

Hardness measurementUnder the term nanotechnology, specialists develop and realize coatings or objects with thicknesses or dimensions of only a few nanometers. Due to their special, physical properties, the coatings or objects that are only a few atomic layers thin have particular advantages. For example, glasses can be coated hydrophobic, that is, water-repellent. Read more...

Software Models Nanocircuit Resistivity

A new simulation program can predict increases in resistivity with decreasing circuit sizes, providing a powerful tool for design and test engineers in the semiconductor industry. Developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and George Washington University (GWU), the code is sophisticated enough to show the interdependent effects of electrons scattering from surfaces and grain boundaries. For more information and a technical report...

Tracking Chaos in AFMs

Tracking Chaos in AFMsAtomic force microscopes (AFMs), powerful tools for measuring nanoscale structures, have been rumored to be occasionally prone to apparently inexplicable errors while operating in tapping mode. Fact or fiction? That's hard to say for sure when you're dealing with the nanoscale. Now, Purdue University researchers have definitively shown that under certain conditions, the regular oscillation of an AFM cantilever can become chaotic; in addition, they detail the types of cantilevers most subject to chaos and the operating amplitudes most likely to trigger it. Oxidative Cutting Yields Nanotransistors

Oxidative Cutting Yields NanotransistorsBy connecting the ends of single-walled carbon nanotubes with molecular bridges, researchers at Columbia University have formed molecular transistors in a technology advance that could lead to the computers of the future. The group used oxidative cutting to render the nanotubes compatible with molecular bonding, an advance over previous work that involved bonding molecules to metal wire leads. Find out more...

Rethinking Heat Transfer in Nanotubes

New research in energy dissipation and thermal breakdown in metallic carbon nanotubes refutes the theory of ballistic charge transport in short, metallic nanotubes under high current conditions. Instead, say researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the charge carriers collide among themselves, transferring energy and dissipating heat. This improved heat dissipation explains why shorter nanotubes can carry higher amounts of current before breakdown.
