Nanoknowledge of Nanotechnology

Nanoknowledge of NanotechnologyFor all the debate about the risks of nanotechnology, the American public remains blissfully unaware — not just of safety and environmental concerns, but of nanotechnology in general. In fact, 70% of adults polled said they have heard little or nothing about nano, this at a time when the market features some 500 nanotechnology-enabled consumer products. Of course, the general public probably has little awareness of emulsifiers and binding agents, even though they show up in everything from face cream to food. The risk is that a false alarm about nanotechnology could have those same blissful consumers turning in a heartbeat. Tellingly, when the 42% who knew nothing about nanotechnology were read a short risk/benefit statement about it, 31% decided the risks would outweigh the benefits.

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

Great Moments in Engineering AwardOn Wednesday, October 10, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to members of the original DynaTAC engineering team in honor of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the first portable, hand-held telephone.

This small band of engineers in Applied Research at the Communications Division of Motorola helped shape telecommunications history. Their work resulted in the DynaTAC, a portable, hand-held, mobile telephone showcased to the world in April 1973, and the precursor of today's cellular telephone.

DynaTAC Primary Designer Donald Linder accepted the award on the team's behalf at a ceremony held at Millennium Park in Chicago. John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA (The Wireless Association) and Tracey Koziol, corporate vice president of Mid and High Tier Devices for Motorola, were on hand to recognize the team for their remarkable accomplishment. Pfeiffer Vacuum, Inc.
PrismaPlus™ — The New Mass Spectrometer

PrismaPlus? — The New Mass Spectrometer Pfeiffer Vacuum supplies a broad portfolio of mass spectrometers, ranging all the way to high-performance mass spectrometers for plasma analysis. Because in production processes it is not only important to know "how much" is contained in the mixture, but also "what" it is that is contained in it.

Malvern Instruments, Inc.
Particle Size — Particle Measuring Dry Samples

Particle Size — Particle Measuring Dry Samples Malvern has a wide range of systems for characterizing the size of dry samples, powders, or granules. Many materials across many branches of industry are produced as dry powders or granules. The stability, chemical reactivity, opacity, flowability, and material strength of many materials are affected by the size and characteristics of the particles within them.

Nanotechnology Makes Its Bones

Nanotechnology Makes Its BonesCovering the anodized titanium scaffolds used for bone implants with carbon nanotubes improves bone-cell growth and calcification, say Brown University researchers. The group grew the parallel wall nanotubes using chemical vapor deposition. The experimental results showed that human bone-forming cells called osteoblasts grew twice as fast on the nanotube-enhanced implant as on a plain one.

Nanoengineering Reflects on Titanium Oxide

Nanoengineering Reflects on Titanium OxideNanorods and nanotubes of titanium oxide stand to improve everything from solar cells to sunscreens. Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory added nanocavities in 100 nm diameter titanium rods to achieve a 25% improvement in light absorption. The group has also developed a new method to synthesize 10 nm diameter iron-doped titanate nanotubes to enhance photoreactivity.

Nanowire Memory Blasts Ahead

Nanowire Memory Blasts AheadA group of University of Pennsylvania researchers have fabricated self-assembling germanium and antimony telluride nanowires they say can form a high-speed computer memory capable of lasting some 100,000 years. The basic mechanism is a phase change — a reversible switch from amorphous to crystalline form and back again. In tests, the devices consumed 0.7 mW per bit for data encoding; the time to write, erase, and retrieve is 50 ns, three orders of magnitude faster than flash memory.

Nanomachines Go Semiconductor

Nanomachines Go SemiconductorA class of nanomachines with semiconductor capabilities can be manipulated with a single electron or a single protein molecule, say University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers. Using an ion beam implanter, the group doped silicon nanomachines with gallium, eliminating the need for the structures to include conductors and, therefore, reducing their weight. Applications include sensors, photovoltaics, and mechanically tunable transistors.

Printing Nanostructures

Printing NanostructuresA nanoscale direct-print method developed by IBM could provide a fabrication method for everything from biosensors and nanowire arrays to integrated circuits. The group starts with a colloidal suspension and uses tailored adhesion of the particles to predefined topographical features on a substrate to print lines, arrays, and bitmaps without altering the optical properties of the particles. Watch the video of the process (link on right-hand side under "Images"); the image grows from the lefthand margin.

Nanoscale Crop Circles

Nanoscale Crop CirclesUsing a laser burn-out method, collaborators from the University of Southern California and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have carved patterns into arrays of multiwalled carbon nanotubes grown on silicon substrates. The group used a laser operating at 532 nm to generate the minimum 244 uW to 9 mW needed for burnout; the higher the power, the deeper the burn. The approach may be useful for lab-on-a-chip applications like medical and biotech analysis.

Graphene Plays Billiards With the Universe

Graphene Plays Billiards With the UniverseGraphene, the unrolled form of carbon nanotubes, could provide a substrate for new types of electronics such as ballistic transistors. University of California at Riverside researchers isolated a single sheet of graphene, attached nanoprobes, and cooled the assembly to 0.26 K to perform low-temperature transport spectroscopy. The group observed ballistic propagation and various reflected charge waves — essentially quantum billiards, with scattering at the boundaries.

Inhalable Insulin Delivery System

Inhalable Insulin Delivery SystemA smart-particle insulin release system can detect spikes in blood sugar levels and counteract them with insulin doses, say University of Texas researchers. A blood-sugar sensing protein called concanavalin A (Con A) binds to insulin-containing liposomes to create inhalable particles. In the presence of blood sugar, the Con A releases the liposomes to bind to the sugars and release their insulin. The system is currently in pre-clinical trials.

Spidey Suits on the Way

Spidey Suits on the Way A carbon-nanotube-based approach to adhesives could provide humans with the ability to scale walls and hang from ceilings, says a team of Italian scientists. Yes, it's a variation on the gecko-inspired adhesive magic we've seen before, but in this case the group has broken down the Spidersuit attributes and noted the various nanotech based solutions. Can the real thing be far away?
