Nanotech Market Set To Surge

Nanotech Market Set To Surge The worldwide market for nanotechnology will grow at 19% annually through 2013, says a new report from the Bharat Book Bureau, with the manufactured goods sector alone slated to reach $1.6 trillion by the end of the forecast period. The analysis identifies government investment in R&D as a primary driver. As a case in point, Brazil and China just signed a joint venture to build a nanotech center in the state of Sao Paulo, seeding it with a combined $6 million. Elsewhere, amid continued budget wrangling, the U.S. Congress continues to push funding for a new national nanotechnology effort. Of course, developing an appropriate regulatory and policy environment remains a key challenge, as the report summarizes. This, in the wake of a controversial decision by the Australian government to decline mandatory labeling on sunscreens containing nanoparticles.

3D Nanostructures the Hybrid Way

3D Nanostructures the Hybrid Way In an example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts, MIT researchers have combined phase-shift lithography and self-assembly to produce highly complex 3D nanostructured materials more easily than ever before. They start by guiding an array of colloidal nanospheres to self assemble directly on a photoresist-coated substrate. The nanospheres act as a mask, forming lenslets that focus light to expose the photoresist for subsequent patterning steps. The group has used the technique to produce structures with features as small as 80 nm in diameter.

Electric Current Switches Nanodot Memory

Electric Current Switches Nanodot Memory By confining a cobalt nanodot in an asymmetric interface, European researchers have switched the magnetic memory element with electrical current, introducing a possible new approach to high-density data storage. The details are a bit arcane, involving spintronics and Rashba interactions, but essentially the magnetic field establishes the state and then an orthogonal electrical field switches that back and forth. The group has demonstrated a reprogrammable magnetic switch that has applications in logic and nonvolatile memory. The technique is both scalable and compatible with present-day magnetic recording.

Nanoparticles Block Flames

Nanoparticles Block Flames Nano-enabled fire retardants are hot stuff at the U.S. National Institute Of Standards and Technology (NIST). A multilayer coating of polyethylenimine and carbon nanotubes retards fire more than 10 times better than conventional materials when applied to the type of polyurethane foam used in home furnishings. The coating appears to fill voids in the material, creating a fire barrier. A different group discovered that evenly dispersing particles of montmorilonite clay in a nanocomposite of the clay and polystyrene creates a crack-resistant heat shield.

Graphene Harvests Energy from Friction

Graphene Harvests Energy from Friction Ionized water flowing over flexible graphene sheets can generate sufficient electrical current to power nanoscale sensors for oil drilling applications, says a group from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. When the water contains chloride ions, they're adsorbed onto the graphene surface, where they couple to free charges. When the frictional force of the water moves ions, they drag the charges along, effectively generating an internal current. In tests, the group used 0.6 M hydrogen chloride as a chloride donor, producing up to 85 nW from a 30 µm x 16 µm film; they'll need to find a less corrosive source of chloride to make a practical device.

Handheld Nanochips Detect Disease

Handheld Nanochips Detect Disease By integrating nano pillars into a 3D microfluidic network, reseachers have constructed a lab-on-a-chip device that can register anthrax cells at ultra-low concentrations. Fluidic inputs route the sample to the reaction chamber, where polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifies the DNA to detectable levels. An integrated waveguide identifies the DNA via fluorescence analysis, delivering results in an hour. Elsewhere, an injection-molded microfluidic device the size of a credit card has been used to perform complex assays like HIV and syphilis testing in Rwanda, providing lab-quality sensitivities in a device that can be used at point-of-care.

Nano Noses Around

Nano Noses Around By interfacing olfactory receptor proteins with a carbon nanotube transistor, University of Pennsylvania researchers have developed an odor sensor with applications in medicine and drug discovery. When odorants bind to the receptor protein, they generate chemical signals that the transistor converts to electrical signals. To extend the lifetime of the proteins, the team embedded them in an artificial membrane. A massively parallel array of the devices could actually mimic a human nose.

Hydrogen Yields Quality Graphene Crystals

Hydrogen Yields Quality Graphene Crystals Growing graphene in a partial hydrogen environment produces high-quality, single-domain graphene crystals, say researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Standard practice has been to grow crystals using chemical-vapor deposition with methane gas as the precursor. The hydrogen activates the surface-bound carbon as well as acting as an etching reagent. By increasing the hydrogen partial pressure to as much as 400x that of the methane, the group can tune grain size and morphology. Applications include microelectronics.

Amorphous Silicon Boosts Nanowire
Photosensitivity

Amorphous Silicon Boosts Nanowire Photosensitivity Passivating nanowires with amorphous silicon reduces surface recombination, increasing photosensitivity by a factor of 90, say Harvard University researchers. Normally, the high surface-to-volume ratio of nanostructures provides a key benefit. In this case, excess surface area leads to increased surface recombination, shortening carrier lifetime by up to five orders of magnitude. The group believes the amorphous silicon enhances performance by extending broken atomic bonds and increasing charge-carrier confinement.

Smell-O-Vision, Coming to a TV Near You

Smell-O-Vision, Coming to a TV Near You Surround sound? 3D? That's so yesterday. The latest twist in consumer electronics, courtesy of Samsung and the University of California, San Diego, is going to be smell-o-vision. In its proof-of-concept device, the group used an X-Y matrix of controllers to selectively heat different perfumes, which escaped through a small aperture. A commercial version would contain thousands of different scents and be compact enough to attach to your television or cell phone. If you think watching a glistening slice of pizza or juicy burger on screen is appealing now, just imagine what it would be like if you could smell it, too. I can hear advertisers rubbing their hands together now.
