Hydrogen Bonds Functionalize Graphene

Hydrogen Bonds Functionalize Graphene Hydrogenating graphene opens the way for functionalization, not just at the edges but in the interior of the sheet, Rice University researchers have shown. The group first lithographically patterns the material to attach hydrogen atoms to it, converting the graphene into graphane, a semiconducting superlattice. Next, they treat the material with diazonium salts, which remove the hydrogen but leave behind carbon-carbon sp3 bonds that provide good attachment points for other organic chains. Applications include sensors and electronics.

Solar Paint Makes Photovoltaics Easy

Solar Paint Makes Photovoltaics Easy A paste of semiconductor quantum dots has the potential to convert ordinary conductive surfaces into solar cells. Notre Dame University chemists developed the binder-free coating of titanium dioxide, cadmium selenide, and cadmium sulfide. When painted onto a conducting glass substrate and annealed, the paste demonstrated a 1% conversion efficiency. Clearly, the team has work to do, but the technology holds the promise for simple, economical photovoltaics.

CNTs Form Flexible Electronics

CNTs Form Flexible Electronics By printing patterns of highly semiconductive single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on honeycombed polyimide substrates, researchers have developed deformable active-matrix backplanes as large as 56 cm². The fully passivated transistor arrays demonstrated electron mobilities as high 20 cm²/Vs and an on/off current ratio of 104. The team used the technology to fabricate a 6 cm x 4 cm, touch-sensitive artificial skin. Elsewhere, UCLA researchers have used ink-jet printing to fabricate CNT-based, top-gated transistors to drive organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays.

Nanocoated Cotton Cleans Itself

Nanocoated Cotton Cleans Itself Applying a nanoparticle coating to cotton fabric and exposing the cloth to the sun triggers a photocatalytic process that removes stains, dirt, and odors. Developed by Chinese researchers, the coating consists of a combination of nitrogen titanium dioxide film and silver iodide. The group attributes the effect to electron-hole separations at the interface between the two semiconductor materials. The coating is robust enough to survive conventional wash cycles and the photocatalytic effect persists through multiple cycles of photodegradation.

Graphene Dispersion Made Simple

Qsonica
Dynamic Light Scattering Nanoparticle
Size Analyzer

Micromeritics

Graphene Dispersion Made Simple Sonicator ultrasonic processors are proven effective for deagglomerating and dispersing graphene, carbon nanotubes, and a wide variety of nanomaterials. Single probes can process small batches or use an inline processor for production volumes. Visit Sonicator.com for details on all the different models and accessories to fit your specific application.

Dynamic Light Scattering Nanoparticle Size Analyzer Particulate Systems VASCO DLS is designed to provide higher detection efficiency for opaque sample, decrease the instrument sensitivity to 'multiple scattering artifact', and strongly reduce the laser thermal effect. With its temperature stabilization feature, the VASCO is capable of measuring particle size in a range from 6 µm to 1 nm.

Nanowire Forms High-resolution Endoscope

Nanowire Forms High-resolution Endoscope By splicing a tin-oxide nanowire to the end of an optical fiber, Berkeley researchers have developed an ultra-high-resolution endoscope for biomedical applications. The fiber couples light into the nanowire waveguide, which is inserted into a cell to perform nanoscale, sub-cellular imaging. Because the nanowire probes are small, the cell can survive the incursion without harm. The group also explored the technology for drug delivery, using it to insert quantum dots into a cell.

Nanoresonator Boosts Microwaves

Nanoresonator Boosts Microwaves A nanomechanical resonator can amplify microwave signals by as much as 25 dB. Aalto University researchers started with a pair of nanowire oscillators, coupling the device to a superconducting cavity resonator and cooling it to -273 C. They expected the probe signal to weaken as the temperature dropped, but instead it amplified significantly with just 20 quanta of noise. The group anticipates extending the technology to the terahertz regime and touts applications at the chip level.

SWCNT Reference Material Hits Market

SWCNT Reference Material Hits Market Working with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) just got a little bit easier with the release of a SWCNT standard reference material from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The challenges of manufacturing SWCNTs lead to dramatic variations from batch to batch, even from the same manufacturer, making it difficult for researchers to know whether variations and experimental results stem from the process or from materials issues. The new standard should take care of that. Each 250 mg sample is fully characterized for physical properties and certified for a range of common contaminants such as barium, dysprosium, and molybdenum.

Defects Boost Graphene Sensitivity

Defects Boost Graphene Sensitivity Introducing linear defects into polycrystalline graphene sensors provides a big increase in sensitivity, say University of Illinois researchers. Graphene sensors register the adsorption of analytes by increasing resistance. Point defects allow easy formation of conduction paths, minimizing the effect. Larger defects inhibit those conduction paths, making the change more pronounced.

Finally! A Cone of Silence

Finally! A Cone of Silence Forget about invisibility cloaks. Physicists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have developed something really useful: a structure that traps sound. The secret is a bilayer polymer plate that vibrates at acoustic frequencies. The properties of the polymer structure are such that it guides acoustic vibrations around the perimeter of the plate, confining them so that they cannot excite pressure waves in the air and transmit sound. It's not entirely clear how the technology could be extended to cloak the noise generated by your average two-year-old, but there's a monster market waiting out there for someone.
