Tokyo's Floating City of the Future

Tokyo's Floating City of the FutureHow is Tokyo dealing with its lack of developable land? By designing a "City in a Pyramid." Intended to float over Tokyo Bay, the robot-constructed pyramid is to provide housing for more than 750,000 people inside skyscrapers that will literally dangle from the exoskeleton like cocoons from a tree branch. Transport from one floor to another will be provided by "Inclinators" that will incline and decline with the system's struts and rails. Personal Rapid Transport Pods will provide pollution-free travel in and out of the city and eliminate the need for automobiles. Not only is the "City in a Pyramid" a conceptual marvel, it may become a marvelous reality.

The Missile Proof Window

The Missile Proof WindowYou've heard of bullet-proof glass before. But now, in direct response to changes in the hurricane building code and increased terrorist threats, engineers have come up with a commercial-grade window that will even repel incoming missiles. The single-hung window is able to withstand a blast event to 6 psi.

The Silt Fence

The Silt FenceWhen it comes to controlling sediment erosion on construction sites, the most popular method is to use a silt fence. Temporary silt fences are fabricated from a geosynthetic fabric. Installed at strategic intervals around the site's perimeter, these flexible fences are ideal for allowing muddy water to pass through while retaining the silt. To get the silt fence to work right, correct installation and maintenance procedures are of paramount importance.

Skylights Revisited

Skylights RevisitedWith the growing need for environmental sustainability and with increasing fuel costs, the use of daylight as a source of illumination is fast becoming the lighting system of choice for schools. It's a fact that students earn higher test scores when exposed to naturally lit classrooms. But utilizing the sun is also a matter of energy efficiency. Here's how a group of Northwest architects and engineers were able to provide a successful working model of a daylight-illuminated school.

Choose the Right Flooring

How do you go about choosing the right flooring for your facility? Very carefully. The floor finish is one of the most highly visible features of your interior space. But selecting a finish that is both durable and attractive does not have to be a daunting task. That is, if you pay attention to the five rules for proper selection and application.

No Brainer News Flash

No Brainer News FlashAdding Insulation Saves Money. It's the most earth shattering headline since "Eating Less Causes Weight Loss." But the fact of the matter is this: in an age of soaring energy prices and diminishing supplies you can't pay enough for insulation. Recently the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) conducted a survey on the amount of polyiso insulation installed across the U.S. for low slope roofs — a total of 22.8 billion board feet. Translate that number into barrels of foreign oil saved and you get an equally impressive number: 217 million.

The Historic New York Subway

The Historic New York SubwayAt the turn of the 20th century New York City was the second largest city in the world. With most of its 3.4 million inhabitants living in Manhattan, it took several hours to get from Wall Street to the Bronx. The solution? An underground railroad system. When the project first broke ground in 1900, it consisted of 21 miles of tunnels and 58 miles of track. An engineering marvel even by today's standards, the subway's construction was not without its share of unique engineering challenges.

Junior Rockefeller's Dream

Junior Rockefeller's DreamIt was one of the only major construction projects underway during the middle of Depression era New York City. Employing thousands of workers, contractors, and construction companies, Rockefeller Center was originally conceived by mega-developer Junior Rockefeller as Metropolitan Square, a complex that would house the Metropolitan Opera. Contemporary multi-purpose, multiple-use skyscraper projects (see Industry Trends & Events, above) owe a debt of gratitude to Junior Rockefeller's dream.
