A State-of-the-Art High-Rise Hospital

A State-of-the-Art High-Rise HospitalIn a bustling urban environment the likes of Chicago, the only solution to lack of space is to build vertically. When you add site constraints to the mix, including possible structural damage to existing buildings during caisson installation, the engineering and building challenges can seem insurmountable. Working in direct collaboration, Architects VOA+OWP/P Design Collaborative, Structural Engineer Thorton Tomasetti, and Builder Power/Jacobs are constructing the new Northwestern Memorial Hospital under less than ideal conditions. When it opens in early 2007, the 950,000 square foot, 17 story state-of-the-art medical facility will handle upwards of 13,000 births per year. Not only will it serve as a model for the design and construction of future urban high-rise hospitals, but so will its collaborative method of construction.

Water Free Storage Space, Below Deck

Water Free Storage Space, Below DeckUnder normal circumstances, the open area located below a second story deck is at the mercy of the weather. The rainwater that seeps through the gaps in the decking can render the space unusable. But now, with the introduction of the TimberTech Deck Drainage System, rain water is diverted away from the building even before it gets the chance to seep through the decking. The now dry open space becomes the perfect place for storage or even a first floor patio.

Geosynthetics Make a Better Concrete

Geosynthetics Make a Better ConcreteFor years, concrete has been the standard building material for channel, seawall, and storm water control reinforcement. The problem with the material is that it tends to break down over time due to undermining and erosion. But with the advent of Geosynthetics, a three-dimensional nylon reinforcement matrix system that prevents concrete destruction from water and vegetation, erosion might be a thing of the past. Geosynthetics has proved to be such a valuable resource in the preservation of concrete that it is also being applied to the undersurface of landfills.

A New Old Shape for Drywall Ceilings

A New Old Shape for Drywall CeilingsDesigners have long dreamed of discovering a drywall system that would mimic the finesse, versatility, and flexibility of the now antiquated plaster-and-lath systems. When drywall was introduced in the 1950s, curved and domed ceilings were virtually eliminated. But now, the past is once more the future. The newly introduced USG Drywall Suspension System allows for a dramatically curved ceiling. What's even better is that the kit costs less than the typical steel stud method of construction and is easily assembled.

Architecturally Inspired Furniture

Architecturally Inspired FurnitureSilver resin indoor/outdoor furniture designed by the world renowned architect, Frank Gehry; a Polder sofa by Hella Jongerius; a leather "witch chair" by Tord Boontje . . . This is where high concept design meets high-end construction. The architecturally conceived furniture featured here functions as good as it looks.

Pavement Protection

Pavement ProtectionIt's not enough to lay out a perfect plain of pavement. Asphalt must be protected and constantly repaired. The trucks and machinery used for preserving the highways and byways of the world are sophisticated tools boasting both intricate robotics and brawn. From Slurry Surfacing equipment to Patch Pothole Killers to Crackfiller Squeegees, the serious business of pavement protection and preservation has never been in better shape.

Wheel Loaders with a View

Wheel Loaders with a ViewMore glass doesn't necessarily mean more visibility. In fact, more glass can often mean more cold in the winter, more heat in the summer, necessitating the use of more complicated and costly interior HVAC systems. What steel wheel loader manufacturers are seeking out is a balance between component placing, better dashboard design, sloping rear hoods and linkage design. As you will discover, some loaders are even coming equipped with rear-view camera systems that eliminate the need for an operator to shift position when hauling a heavy load.

Concrete Houses to Replace Wood

Lumber prices are skyrocketing. At the same time, stronger, more durable building materials are in demand, especially in the wake of natural disasters such as Katrina. In coastal areas where more dire and unpredictable weather patterns seem to be the long-term trend, wood homes and structures are seen as risky at best. With that in mind, builders and designers are investigating alternative building materials, the primary one being concrete. While the cost of using concrete instead of the more traditional wood-frame construction is slightly higher, the advantages of this building material are obvious: concrete can withstand just about anything Mother Nature can throw at it.

Everyday Upgrades

Everyday UpgradesThese building products and tools are as familiar to you as the back of your hand. Or are they? A newly designed cordless drywall screw-gun that dramatically reduces installation time; a new two-piece window-wall opening that virtually eliminates mistakes during pouring and setting of concrete; state-of-the-art landscaped pathway lighting that replaces bulbs with a 25,000 hour rope light . . . All these innovative products promise to improve working conditions and the condition of the work.

Christopher Payne: Architectural Witness

Christopher Payne: Architectural WitnessNew York is home to a number of abandoned psychiatric hospitals. Most of them were built in the early part of the twentieth century and have since been replaced with more modern complexes. Appearing more like castles than hospitals, these gothic tower structures "were designed with optimism." Or so attests architectural photographer and archivist, Christopher Payne. Payne, who works for Studio Kenji in New York City, has spent years traveling the state, photographing these abandoned and haunted structures. Armed only with his camera, he is a building and construction crusader, "barely one step ahead of the wrecking ball."

Building on the Fast-Track

Design-Build construction has revolutionized the way builders and architects design and construct a commercial project. By bypassing the traditional construction method of design before production, architects, engineers, and builders come together to form a collaboration in order to accelerate the production schedule. This overlapping of design and construction bears with it the ability to save an owner precious time and money. But this overlapping is not without its pitfalls and risks. Enter the SAFEDB Methodology or "A Sound Approach to Formulate and Evaluate Design Build" projects. With Design-Build here to stay, designers and builders are paying close attention to this new methodology to ensure a safe, sound structure built on the "fast-track."

Construction Technology Goes Green

Construction Technology Goes GreenThe Green Movement has finally caught up to the building and construction trades. In recognition of market demands, architects, engineers, and builders have teamed up to create the LEEDS and USGBC programs. These "Green Building Rating Systems" will assure that every building project entered into under their guidelines will be energy efficient and environmentally sound. Here are just a few examples of how the Green Movement and building technology are changing the way we design and build the cities of tomorrow.

A Hotel Room to Remember

A Hotel Room to RememberDo you recall the last hotel room you slept in? Do you recall the wall finishes or floor finishes? Do you remember the furnishings? Or does your memory tend to lump all the hotel rooms you've ever visited into a kind of standard bland formula. That is, a bed, a bathroom, a desk, a television, and framed dime-store prints for decoration. Architects Deborah Loyd Forrest and Stephen Perkins are on a mission to change all that. Through their unique designs and a dedication to the LEEDS Green program, the team is transforming "impersonal spaces" into memorable "personal spaces."
