Exhibitors and attendees alike reported that the European Coatings Show and Congress in Nürnberg, Germany this March was a success, and that the industry is doing well despite enduring many economic hardships. Sustainability and environmental stewardship were big topics for this year, as companies touted their awards for eco-friendly products and processes, including Eastman Chemical, named Energy Star Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A low-pressure chemical vapor deposition process allows thin films to be applied to almost any optical material regardless of the complexity of its shape or surface. A dirty plant is a dangerous plant, so cleanliness is key to safe and efficient operation. The Fraunhofer Institute in Germany is developing a variety of anti-fouling coatings suitable for just about every processing facility by custom tuning the surface energy of standard coatings. For example, by adding certain elements to a carbon-based anti-corrosion coating, the researchers can also make the coating resistant to other specific contaminants, from chemicals to crude oil to food proteins.

With patents and publications in tow, researchers from the University of Dayton in Ohio are collaborating to form the new Center of Excellence in Thin-Film Research and Surface Engineering (CETRASE). The researchers hail from diverse departments including electrical engineering, biology, and physics, but share an interest in the development of surface technologies to create future fuel and solar cells and batteries, electro-optics, sensors, photovoltaics, and nano-based materials.

Duke University researchers have created a new marine material that can physically move at the microscopic level to remove pesky bacteria, much the same way an animal twitches its skin to get rid of bothersome flies. The material "wrinkles" or shakes in response to an electrical or mechanical stimulus, dislodging unwanted contaminants on the surface.

Bruker recently announced the redesign of its Universal Mechanical Tester and the shipment of the first device to the University of Arkansas' Nano Mechanics and Tribology Laboratory. The lab will use the tester to measure substrate surfaces before and after friction testing or material characterization, providing the researchers with key data about the substrate. The new tester features an optical profiler and a range of interchangeable fixtures and drives.

A patented nano-based lubricant additive will see wide distribution in Italy, thanks to a new commercial partnership. NanoLub®, developed by NanoMaterials Ltd., can be used in oil-, grease-, or powder-based lubricants and features nanoparticles that respond to wear and friction by releasing a film that continuously coats moving engine parts.

The ASTM D3451 guide covers the selection and use of procedures for testing coating powders and powder coatings. The guide also refers to methods developed specifically for the coating powder industry by the Powder Coating Institute, PCI, and the International Organization for Standards, ISO.
