In its latest issue, IEEE Spectrum describes a nanowire FET, also known as gate-all-around transistor, that can be scaled down as per Moore's law. These advances have been demonstrated by two French researchers — Guilhem Larrieu of the Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems, in Toulouse, and Xiang-Lei Han of the Institute for Electronics, Microelectronics, and Nanotechnology, in Lille.

Philips Bodine REDiTEST self-testing/self-diagnostic fluorescent emergency ballasts automatically test emergency lighting for 30 seconds every 30 days, and for 90 minutes once a year according to code. In addition, they continuously monitor charging current and battery voltage. An LED and audible alarm alerts maintenance personnel to ballast status.

In a recent Q&A with ElectronicsWeekly magazine, Cadence Design Systems' vice president of worldwide field operations in EMEA, Alexander Duesener, told the magazine that chip designers have a crucial role in maintaining Europe's strengths in wireless and automotive systems. It provides comprehensive guidelines for incorporating ESD protection into IC designs below 130 nm. The ESD working group that developed this document included representatives from IBM, Intel, GlobalFoundries, NXP, Samsung, and STMicroelectronics.

The JEDEC JESD 625 standard, available now from IHS, establishes the minimum requirements for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) control methods and materials used to protect electronic devices that are susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge.
