Checking Compliance in the Bottling Business

Checking Compliance in the Bottling Business Ceramic Industry reports on a 2006 screening effort conducted by the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse to sample compliance with state packaging laws. Targeting six beverage distributors, TPCH requested evidence of compliance with the group's model packaging law prohibiting the addition of four toxic metals to glass bottles. Compliance is demonstrated with a standard leaching test or by claiming a recycle content exemption. The intent of such actions is to reduce packaging toxicity at the source, before it can enter the solid waste stream. A similar screening effort in 2007 is anticipated.

Something to Hoot About Morgan Advanced Ceramics has secured a contract to supply ceramic intensifiers for NASA's orbital wide-angle light (OWL) collector. In response to incoming photons, electrons are released from a photo-tube at one end of the intensifier, while a lens focuses an image into a ceramic vacuum tube. The intensifiers will be used to image ultra-high-energy cosmic rays that impinge upon the earth-orbiting system.

Advanced Glasses Forecast Change

Advanced glasses and glass ceramics have found applications in areas ranging from dental implants to radiation shielding, and they are expected to play major roles in such emerging technologies as wireless communication and ion-exchange membranes for fuel cells. The need to increase energy efficiency in the production of these materials is driving changes further downstream in the industry. As a result, high technology and specialty applications will need to conform to new production techniques for glass and glass ceramic materials technologies.

They Brought a Portfolio of Potential Products At an annual meeting in February, Joseph Miller, chief technology officer of Corning Inc., gave investors a hint of new products in Corning's pipeline. The emerging technologies included "miniature green lasers" for hand-held devices; a new "silicon-on-glass" technology for electronic circuits; and "microreactor technology" for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Graphite Furnace Extends Ceramic Analysis As ceramic materials capable of handling ever higher temperatures evolve, the need for analytical instrumentation must follow closely behind. Analyses performed in furnaces lined with alumina are limited to 1,750°C, but a new graphite furnace accommodates analyses as high as 2,400°C.
